Woodland High School celebrated its spring sports student-athletes earlier this week with an awards banquet.

Individually and as a team, the Wolves enjoyed plenty of regular and postseason success.

The school’s Most Valuable Player awards were awarded to; Owen Harrison for boys tennis, Bella Fernandez for varsity softball, Mason Stewart for boys golf, Martez Morales for boys track and field, Clarissa Vega for girls track and field and Austin Stapleton for varsity baseball.

The varsity softball team finished the year with a 10-12 overall record, going 4-8 in the Golden Empire League, finishing in fourth place. Senior Bella Fernandez led the team in hits (33), triples (3) and home runs with one. She also had 18 RBI and scored 18 runs. Senior Isabel Giroux led the team with 22 runs, while Nayeli Cardenas led the team in RBI with 25. Addison Tetreault was second on the team in hits (31).

The varsity baseball team enjoyed a fantastic season going 20-5, including 17-1 in the league to become league champions. Their reward for a fine season was the No. 1 overall seed in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Playoffs. After enjoying a first-round bye, they’d defeated Liberty Ranch 5-0, advancing to the semifinals.

After winning a best-of-three-game series in the semifinals against No. 5 seed Casa Roble, the Wolves went on to the D4 championship game against No. 2 seed Oakmont. Their season, however, would end with a 10-0 loss to the Vikings.

For boys tennis, sophomore Owen Harrison was the team MVP and an academic all-league recipient.

“Owen was the definition of diligence, and he carried himself all the time in a positive manner,” Wolves head coach Javier Marin said. “He is just a natural leader.

As a sophomore, Marin believes he can only get better.

“Like in any sport, you are going to have to put in the work in the offseason,” Marin said. “He will put in extra work to ensure he finishes better next year. I’m looking forward to him taking his performances to the next level next season.”Woodland High School golfer Mason Stewart finished second in Golden Empire League in points. In the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, with a spot in the CIF Masters Tournament on the line, Stewart and Pioneer’s Matthew Nunez found themselves in a five-way tie e-way tie for the final spot along with three other golfers from Mountain House, West Campus and Ceres.

They’d all tee off from Hole 6, and after the first sudden-death playoff hole, only Stewart and Nunez remained.

Unfortunately for Stewart, he’d lose out on the final spot after Nunez drained a 20-foot birdie putt to defeat Stewart and advance.

“Mason is an unbelievable sophomore talent with such a bright future ahead, academically and on the golf course,” Wolves golf coach Michael Monk said.

Senior Martez Morales earned the team MVP for the boys track and field team after competing in the 300-meter hurdles, 110-meter hurdles, and triple jump, scoring the most points for the team in all the league meets.

He’d win the 110 hurdles in three out of four league meets, and since he got first place at the Golden Empire League Championship meet, he was selected as an all-league recipient.

Mateo Morales, also a senior, suffered from a hamstring injury before the season started, so he tried shot put and discuss for the first time this year. At the end of the season, he ran the 300-meter hurdle race and won, earning an all-league selection.

On the girls team, Clarissa Valdivia Vega, also a senior, competed on the 4×100-meter team, the 200, and the 400.

She won first place in the 400 with a personal record at the Golden Empire League meet. She did not win an all-league selection but was awarded the girls team MVP award after scoring the most points during all of the league meets.

“All three of the athletes were a joy to coach,” said Wolves track and field coach Kelsey Rothwell, “They all have such great attitudes and personalities and were very motivated to do well. It was very fun to coach them over the last four years, and I am very excited to see where all three of them go in their future. I know they will do great things, and wish them all the best.”
