



Scotts Valley High’s softball team beat visiting Aptos 5-3 on Thursday, and the Falcons secured a big win in their bid to repeat as Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion.
Sofie Seese gave up one earned run in her complete-game win. She gave up five hits, didn’t issue a walk, and struck out three batters.
Jazzy Doubek had two hits and two RBI for the Falcons (14-5-1, 7-1). Taylor Wilson hit a solo home run, her team leading sixth of the season, and drew two walks, one of them intentional.
Scotts Valley’s Chloe Kent, Gracie Delgado, and Nick Powell each had a hit and run scored.
Kailani Aguayo had two hits, one RBI, and scored a run for the Mariners (12-6, 8-3). Lilly McGee doubled and had two RBI. Emma Burgueno doubled and scored a run, and Bailey Fulton had a hit and scored a run.
Losing pitcher Mya Najera-White only gave up two earned runs in her complete-game outing.
Scotts Valley hosts Soquel on Monday at 4:30 p.m. Aptos plays at San Lorenzo Valley on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
At SLV 5, Soquel 4 >> Sophia Sarmiento with wall-off double for the Cougars in their SCCAL win Thursday.
Sarmiento finished with two hits and two RBI.
SLV (8-7, 6-3) had eight hits and drew five walks. Maddy Murphy had a hit, one RBI, and scored a run. Angie Fulkerson doubled and scored a run. Cheyenne Owen and Bailey Filice each had a hit and run scored. Grace Purtcher had a hit, walk, and one RBI.
Kate Silva drove in a pair of runs for the Knights. Mia Riddle had two hits and one RBI. Kylie South and Emma Niizawa each had a hit and scored a run, and Ellie Howell and Katie Niizawa also scored one run.
Purtscher earned the win, and Howell took the loss.On Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., SLV hosts Aptos, while Soquel plays at Santa Cruz.
Santa Cruz 11, at Harbor 3 >> Leah Serna had three hits, one RBI, and scored three runs for the Cardinals in their SCCAL win Thursday.
Lucia Curley had two hits, including a triple, one RBI, and scored twice for the Cardinals (7-10, 5-4). Amaris Gonzalez had a hit, one RBI, and scored twice. Molly Pisciotta had a hit, one RBI, and scored a run.
Sofia Monroe had three hits, including two doubles, one walk, and scored a run for the Pirates. Leah Heitmann doubled and drove in two runs.
Santa Cruz plays at Monte Vista Christian (9-12) in a nonleague game Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Harbor hosts Scotts Valley on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
King City 18, at MVC 13 >> Senior Kayla Fullalove-Silveira and sophomore Ava Alvarado each hit two home runs in the Mustangs’ Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division loss Thursday.
Fullalove-Silveira finished with three hits, four RBI, and four runs scored. Alvarado drew two walks, had six RBI and scored three runs. Fullalove-Silveira has seven home runs this season and Alvarado has two.
Sophomore Gianna Johnson had two hits, including a double, one RBI, and a run scored.
MVC (9-12, 3-9) hosts Soledad (10-7, 5-6) on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Boys track and field
SCCAL Championships >> Two finals for the SCCAL Championships were conducted at the SCCAL Trials at Aptos High on Thursday. The remainder of the finals take place Saturday at Aptos at 10 a.m.
Aptos (junior Brady Bliesner, senior Vincent Sandford-Carroll, and sophomores Anthony Sandford-Carroll and Sam Hansen) took first in the 4×800 relay in 7 minutes, 59.21 seconds.
Soquel senior Logan Walters took first in the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches).
Aptos senior Casey MacConnell took first in the 100 prelims in a personal-best 11.22, the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Girls track and field
SCCAL Championships >> Two finals for the SCCAL Championships were conducted at the SCCAL Trials at Aptos High on Thursday. The remainder of the finals take place Saturday at Aptos at 10 a.m.
Santa Cruz (seniors Heidi Green and Amelia Palm and freshmen Athena Pantos and Isla Roake) took first in the 4×800 relay in 9:51.33.
Cardinals senior Meilia Nee took first in the pole vault (10-0).
College commitment
MVC’s Brunelli to C-M-S >> MVC senior runner Kylie Brunelli will continue her academic career at Harvey Mudd College and compete for NCAA Division III Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ cross country and track and field teams.
On the track, Brunelli holds the Mustangs’ school record in the 3,200 (11:02.73) and is second all-time in the mile (5:30.21) and 1,600 (5:19.66). In cross country, she holds the school’s 3-mile record (18:05.0).
MVC will celebrate Brunelli’s commitment at its Academic Research Center on May 15 at 3:45 p.m.
High school baseball
At St. Francis 4, Soledad 1 >> Pitcher Nash Horton gave up five hits, two walks, and one run over six innings in the Sharks’ PCAL Gabilan Division win Thursday.
Mason Borrego pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
Javier Fonseca had two hits and two RBI for the Sharks. Horton had two hits and scored one run, and Noah Magana had one hit and scored twice. Nick Fantl had a hit and one RBI.
Daniel Valenzuela had two hits for the Aztecs (8-14, 4-11). Videl Perez had a hit and one RBI, and Ethan Sanchez scored one run.
St. Francis (11-11, 7-7) plays Hollister (14-8, 9-6) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Girls lacrosse
Scotts Valley 23, Aptos 10 >> Sofia Niklaus produced a new personal record of 18 points, 15 goals and three assists, and the Falcons pulled away in the second half for the win in PCAL play Thursday.
Niklaus also had 27 draw possessions, including seven draw controls, and seven ground balls.
Skylar Dufour had one goal and six assists, and personal records of 19 draw controls, and 18 ground balls.
Dillon Fiorita had three goals, two assists, and five ground balls. Erin Szymanski had two goals and two assists, and Claire Skinner and Serena Sanford-Brantley each scored a goal.
Girls volleyball
At Kirby 3, Oakwood 0 >> Junior Middle Seeley Herr had five kills and three blocks and the Griffins won 25-16, 25-12, 25-16 in their PCAL Cypress Division finale Thursday.
Junior Setter Henry Annon had 24 assists, four blocks, three kills and three aces for the second-place Griffins (10-8, 10-4).
Sophomore libero Banyan Revell made 10 digs, and senior opposite Will Gust had five kills, two blocks, and two aces.
Mount Madonna 3, at Scotts Valley 1 >> The Hawks won 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21 in their SCCAL and regular-season finale Thursday.
Middle blocker Otto Palma made six kills for the Falcons (5-22, 2-10). Outside hitter Raith Wallwork had four kills, four digs, and two aces, and Neo Ciotti made 16 digs,
Men’s tennis
UC Santa Cruz 4, at Salisbury 3 >> The Banana Slugs needed a decisive third set in three of their four singles wins to as they secured the narrow win in their regular-season finale in Salisbury, Maryland, on Thursday.
No. 2 Radin Sadeghi won 3-6, 7-5, 6-0, No. 5 Mayur Nookala won 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, and No. 6 Adam Hidas won 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. No. 4 Praneet Varade won in straight sets for UCSC.
The No. 4 seed Banana Slugs (11-10) face No. 1 Mary Washington in the semifinals of the Coast To Coast Conference Championship in Newport News, Virginia, on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Women’s tennis
UCSC 6, at Salisbury 1 >> The Banana Slugs won their regular-season finale in Salisbury, Maryland, on Thursday.
No. 1 Sara Beckman and Natalie Sprenger, No. 2 Chloe Wu and Melody Ghaffari, and No. 3 Sweden Van Houten and Meghana Damojipurapu earned wins to earn UCSC the point in doubles.
Beckman won 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 1 singles, and No. 2 Damojipurapu, No. 4 Sprenger, No. 5 Wu, and No. 6 Van Houten won their singles matches in straight sets.
UCSC (12-6) nearly earned a sweep. Ghaffari lost 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (16-14) at No. 3 singles.
