Ten teams from the Boulder, Longmont and Broomfield areas proved good enough to earn a spot in their respective regional tournaments. Three were even better.
Lyons and Peak to Peak won hosting responsibilities in the 2A and 3A classifications and didn’t waste the opportunities that their strong regular season resumes propped them up for. Mead’s ride to the 4A state tournament was much bumpier and required an upset of its host, Roosevelt, to move forward.
All three will begin their state tournament journeys on Thursday at the Denver Coliseum. Mead and Peak to Peak will play in the morning, while Lyons spends most of the day waiting for the first round to be completed before it takes the court.
Class 4A
The 17-8 Mead Mavericks made the short trip to Roosevelt for the 4A Region 12 tournament over the weekend and, after eight long sets, ensured that their season wouldn’t end there. They swept No. 25 Wellington with relative ease, then engaged in a full marathon against the Roughriders for a chance to advance. After dropping the first two sets, the Mavericks won out. They’ll now face No. 5 Montrose in the first round of the state tournament, with their first match scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Class 3A
The 20-5 Peak to Peak Pumas have been a dangerous force throughout the season and accentuated that fact during their home regional on Saturday. They beat both No. 28 Aspen and No. 16 Cedaredge in four sets to solidify their first-ever trip to the Coliseum. They drew a matchup with No. 8 Sterling in the first round, which will begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday.
Class 2A
The Lyons Lions will get to enjoy the fruits of their 22-3 labor and rest easy on Thursday morning. The No. 3 seed will await the winner of No. 6 Wiggins and No. 11 Hoehne, then go to battle at 5 p.m. later in the day. They achieved their favorable seeding by sweeping both Front Range Christian and Buena Vista at their home regional, thanks in large part to the elite serving of Audrey Voss and a strong attack. The last time the Lions finished 20-3 during the regular season, in 2017, they won the state title.
