


No. 6 UConn cruises in 19th straight win out of conference
HARTFORD, Conn.>> Tristen Newton scored 22 points to lead No. 6 UConn to a 107-67 rout of Stonehill College on Saturday.
Freshman Stephon Castle had 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the defending national champions, who have won 19 consecutive nonconference games, which includes last season’s run through the NCAA Tournament.
Donovan Clingan added 16 points in 17 minutes; Alex Karaban scored 15 points; and Cam Spencer added 12 for the Huskies (2-0).
No. 7 Houston 82, Texas A&M-CC 50
HOUSTON>> J’Wan Roberts had 17 points and nine rebounds and L.J. Cryer added 15 points to lead Houston over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Cryer had 12 points in the first half, and Roberts scored 11 first-half points to drive Houston to a 14-point halftime lead.
Ja’Vier Francis scored 13 points and Emanuel Sharp had 11 points for Houston (2-0), which shot 42%, including 6 of 22 on 3-pointers.
No. 8 Creighton 89, North Dakota St. 60
OMAHA, Neb.>> Trey Alexander scored 21 points and Baylor Scheierman added 17 in Creighton’s second straight win to open the season.
Ryan Kalkbrenner scored 11 of his 13 points during a 16-0 run to open the second half that put away the Bluejays’ Summit League opponent.
Creighton (2-0) shot 60% from the field, made 12 of 28 3-pointers.
North Dakota State (2-1) got 15 points from Damari Wheeler-Thomas.
Late Friday Colorado State 105, Wright State 77
FORT COLLINS>> Isaiah Stevens scored 22 points and broke the program single-game assist record with 14 as Colorado State rolled.
Stevens also broke Hunter Maldonado’s career assists mark (630) in the Mountain West, moving to 642 with nearly a full season to go.
Nique Clifford scored 19 points and added nine rebounds for the Rams (2-0). Joel Scott had 17 points and shot 7 for 10 (1 for 3 from 3-point range) and 2 of 4 from the free throw line.
Karlen, King lead Marquette past No. 23 Illinois, 71-67
MILWAUKEE >> Liza Karlen scored 22 points, Jordan King added 19 with clutch free throws in the closing seconds and Marquette beat No. 23 Illinois 71-67.
The Golden Eagles (2-0) took the lead for good early in the second quarter and were up by nine late in the third quarter but didn’t ice the game until King’s final free throw with 3.1 seconds left.
Genesis Bryant hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to pull the Illini within 62-61 with seven minutes left but they could never get the ball to drop for the lead.
Camille Hobby made a layup with just under 20 seconds left to make it 68-67, but King hit two from the line at 14.1. Hobby had 18 points and seven rebounds for Illinois.
