Junior center Will Roden scored a team-high 12 points, but the short-handed and youth-laden Harbor High boys basketball team suffered a 71-44 nonleague loss to visiting Greenfield on Thursday.
Guard/forward Miles Dix scored 10 points for Harbor (4-5 overall) before exiting in the fourth quarter.
Greenfield made nine of its 12 3-pointers in the first half, when it jumped out to a 41-15 lead.
“They were on fire,” Pirates coach Craig Wooden said.
Jonathan Miranda scored 20 points to lead the Bruins (6-4), and teammate David Diaz scored 18 points.
Harbor suited up one senior, two juniors, four sophomores, and two freshmen.
The Pirates were without injured junior guard/forward Andres Martinez and Malik Woooden, who is out of town, but welcomed back junior forward Brody Gallagher, whose equilibrium was a little off after he returned from a lengthy cruise.
The team is also playing without senior guard Guerande Houssin, who transferred to Santa Cruz in the offseason.
“If we still had G, instead of being 4-5, we’d be 7-2,” coach Wooden said. “That’s how much of a difference he makes.”
Freshman guard Hudson Bare saw action and scored four points.
“We haven’t had everyone together because of vacations and injuries,” Wooden said. “We’re hoping by the start of league we can get something together. I know we’re one of the youngest teams, but we’re close.”
Harbor still has three nonleague road games remaining before Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play begins Jan. 14. The Pirates play at University Preparatory Academy (8-1) in San Jose on Saturday at noon, Ann Sobrato (3-9) in Morgan Hill on Tuesday at 7 p.m., and Mount Pleasant (4-5) in San Jose on Jan. 19 at 6 p.m.
At Carmel 50, Aptos 48 >> Senior forward Isaiah Ackerman eclipsed the 1,000 career points milestone in the Mariners’ nonleague loss to the defending Central Coast Section Division IV champion on Thursday.
Aptos won the teams’ first meeting in Carmel, 50-47, on Dec. 20.
Carmel had a 19-point second quarter, but Aptos entered the half with a 28-26 lead. Neither team led by more than six points in the second half, and Aptos missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer.
Ackerman needed 20 points to reach 1,000 and finished with 24. Senior Nick Tovani scored 11 and Demian Matlow returned from an injury and scored nine points.
Senior Warren Blut scored 23 points to lead the Padres (4-2), and senior Hudson Rutherford added 14 points.
Aptos (9-4) concludes its nonleague slate at Adrian Wilcox (6-1) in Santa Clara on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Girls wrestling
La Manzanita Classic >> Aptos junior Isabella Cruz (100 pounds) took second place in her weight division at the La Manzanita Classic at Watsonville High on Thursday.
Cruz was pinned by North Monterey County freshman Nalani Mendoza in the final. Cruz finished 3-1 with three wins by pin, the fastest coming in 44 seconds.
Santa Cruz’s Marlena Gustafson (125) and Vera Bentley (130) took third to help the Cardinals (50.0 points) take 10th place out of 22 teams.
San Lorenzo Valley’s Jennifer Black (120), and Soquel’s Alize Robles (130) and Anika Radich (135) took fourth. Aptos’ Amelie Mintun (190) took fifth.
Livingston (205.5) won the team title. North Monterey County (122.0) took second, and Rancho San Juan (88.5) was third. Soquel (40.0) took 12th, Aptos (30.0) took 15th, SLV (18.5) took 18th, and Pajaro Valley (13.0) was 20th.
Girls basketball
Santa Cruz 55, Banning 32 >> The Cardinals used a third-quarter surge to win their opener at the Dragons New Year’s Tournament at Helen Bernstein High In Los Angeles on Thursday.
Santa Cruz led 19-18 at the half and outscored the Pilots 21-4 in the third quarter.
“We have been struggling to play as a team, and we really started playing good, solid team basketball tonight,” Cardinals coach Todd Trowbridge said.
Mila Conn and Karolina Espinosa each scored 13 points to lead the Cardinals (3-7). Conn also had four rebounds, four steals, and three assists, while Espinosa had four steals, three rebounds, and three assists.
Brooke Alden had nine points and six rebounds, and Ania Sinnott and Sasha Wallan each chipped in with six points. Sinnott also had four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Senior guard Sara Gonzales scored 12 points to lead the Pilots (3-6), and junior Joshlyn Harris added eight points.
Santa Cruz was scheduled to face Robert F. Kennedy Community (10-3) in the semifinals on Friday, after the Sentinel went to press.
Scotts Valley 44, at Cupertino 32 >> Sammy Rebbert scored 11 of her game-high 16 points in the second half, and the Falcons pulled away for their nonleague road win Thursday.
Rebbert made five of her six free throws in the fourth quarter, and the Falcons were 16-of-25 shooting from the charity line.
Junior Brooklyn Williams scored 11 points for the Falcons (6-2), who were deadlocked at 18-all at the half with the Pioneers. Sophomore Hanna Shehorn scored seven points, and Claire Skinner had four points and 11 rebounds.
Junior guard Jessica Shaffer scored nine points to lead the Pioneers (2-5).
Scotts Valley hosts St. Francis (7-1) of Watsonville on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Women’s basketball
At UT-Dallas 75, UC Santa Cruz 54 >> Freshman guard Emilie Ngo had 18 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals, but the Banana Slugs opened their three-game road trip in Texas with a loss Thursday.
Junior wing/center Jenna Gorton had 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two blocks for the Banana Slugs (5-12). Freshman forward Claire Galbo and sophomore forward Alexa Litchev each scored seven points.
Forward Anna Yellen, a graduate student, had 17 points and four rebounds to pace the Comets (8-5), who led 44-25 at the half.
UT-Dallas outrebounded UCSC 44-31 and made 17 second-chance points. The Comets also capitalized on the UCSC’s 15 turnovers and scored 16 fast-break points.
Eight of the 10 Comets who made field goals tallied five or more points, as UT-Dallas’ bench outscored UCSC’s bench 36-4.
