Anna Booms isn’t like a lot of little sisters. She listens to her older sister — at least she does on the soccer field.

The Booms sisters — Anna and Kate — along with Nia Guess and Mia Mollicone and goalkeeper Lily Hansen led a defensive effort that protected a one-goal lead for most of the second half Tuesday and helped Regina edge Ann Arbor Greenhills 1-0 in a Division 3 regional soccer game at Detroit Country Day.

Anna Booms, a freshman, joined her older sister on the back line this season.

“It’s amazing having her back there with me,” said Kate Booms. “She listens to me and we work really well together.”

The entire defense worked well throughout the game.

“It helps when my wingbacks go up and help with the backing,” Kate Booms said. “The defense did a really good job and Lily made some great saves.

“It’s just communication. We have to communicate in the back. That goes a long way.”

Regina coach Stefano Moraccini Sr. said that limiting the Gryphons’ attempts was one of the keys to the Saddleites’ victory.

“We had to possess the game, hold the ball,” Moraccini said. “We had to limit the attempts they had on our goal, which I felt we did a very good job doing, besides the corner kicks. We possessed the mid-third. It wasn’t easy because their number 11 (Cate Alumkal) goes from the 18 to the 18. We did a good job.

“Defensively, we’re led by Kate. She’s big, she’s strong and she’s a captain and the leader on defense.”

Regina’s attack is led by Jenna Moeller, who scored the only goal 8:36 into the second half. It was a pretty passing play that led to the score.

“We started in the back and had real good ball movement through the middle,” Moeller said. “Nia Guess sent an amazing ball right through the defenders. I made a run through the back line and placed it in the corner. It was our team collectively that made it possible.”

Regina had several scoring chances throughout the game, however Gryphons keeper Makiyah Baylor turned away all but one.

“We had several opportunities but their keeper made some fantastic saves,” Moraccini said. “We played a little differently in the second half, which helped us offensively.”

Although she plays defense, Guess is able to help the attack, too.

“We have a lot of girls who can play multiple positions. We’re very versatile,” Moraccini said. “Nia can play up top, midfield and back line. Jenna wears many hats, she could probably play keeper, too, if we needed her. Kate plays multiple positions. We’re very fortunate.”

Greenhills had three corner kicks in the last 12 minutes, but was unable to convert.

“Everyone has to stay on their man,” Kate Booms said. “If they stay on their man, there are no open players to score.”

The temperature was in the mid-80s, something the players haven’t been used to during this abnormally cool spring.

“It was hard,” Moeller said. “Both teams were really struggling but we pushed hard. We lifted each other up. It was hard but we did it. I was proud of everybody.”

Regina will play Country Day for the regional championship on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Yellowjackets defeated Grosse Ile 2-0 in the other semifinal.
