The New York Jets have a new offensive coordinator, and he’s coming from the Detroit Lions.

Tanner Engstrand, who had been Detroit’s passing game coordinator for the last two seasons, was hired Friday by the Jets and former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who is now the head coach in New York. Engstrand was presumed to be a candidate for Detroit’s formerly vacant offensive coordinator position, but that officially went to John Morton on Wednesday.

Engstrand’s time with the Lions began in 2020, when he was hired as an offensive assistant. He was retained by head coach Dan Campbell in 2021 and promoted to tight ends coach in 2022. He became the passing game coordinator in 2023 and contributed to the Lions having the second-most passing yards in the NFL (4,401) that season.

In 2024, the Lions once again had the second-most passing yards (4,474), helping them average an NFL-best 33.2 points per game.

Engstrand played quarterback at San Diego State in the early 2000s before he became a graduate assistant at San Diego in 2005. He stayed at the school, eventually working his way up to offensive coordinator, until 2017, when he was hired by Michigan to be an offensive analyst.

The 42-year-old Engstrand later went on to become the offensive coordinator for the XFL’s DC Defenders in 2020 before he began his tenure with the Lions.

In New York, Engstrand might be coaching 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers - if Rodgers decides to return for the final year of his contract. The Jets could also decide to move on without him.

The future of receiver Davante Adams is also uncertain with the Jets. His contract calls for him to be make $35.64 million in each of the next two years, and the Jets could seek to renegotiate.
