The United States player pool has never been more prominent in Europe’s top soccer leagues and two of its key players scored on the opening night of the continent’s top competition on Tuesday.

Christian Pulisic netted AC Milan’s early opener in its 3-1 Champions League match loss against Liverpool. That came shortly after Weston McKennie scored Juventus’ second during a 3-1 win over PSV Eindhoven in an earlier match.

The match at San Siro was less than three minutes old when Pulisic played a one-two with Alvaro Morata and burst down the right flank before firing across into the far bottom corner.

It was a fitting way for Pulisic, who turns 26 on Wednesday, to mark his birthday.

Pulisic was the first American to play in a Champions League final when he won the competition with Chelsea in 2021.

Steelers sticking with Fields at QB >> Justin Fields will likely make his third straight start at quarterback when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Coach Mike Tomlin said that Fields will practice with the starters during the early portion of the week while Russell Wilson continues to rehab from a calf injury he aggravated a few days ahead of the season opener earlier this month.

Tomlin said there has been no change in Wilson’s status. The nine-time Pro Bowler was limited in practice last week and while Wilson said he believes he is getting closer to a return, the Steelers are planning to have Fields play against the unbeaten Chargers (2-0).

Guardians place All-Star OF Kwan on injured list >> Guardians All-Star left fielder Steven Kwan was placed on the 10-day injured list with mid-back inflammation, an injury that may have contributed to the leadoff hitter’s second-half slump.

The team also recalled outfielder Myles Straw from Triple-A Columbus and designated pitcher Carlos Carrasco for assignment.

Kwan’s issue has kept him out of the lineup for the past five games. The move is retroactive to Sept. 14.

Kwan has been in a prolonged slide at the plate. After leading MLB with a .352 average at the All-Star break, he’s hitting only .201 in the second half for the AL Central leaders.
