



Nash Horton hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to help St. Francis High’s baseball team knock off division leading Carmel 6-5 in the teams’ Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division game Thursday,
It was the lone hit of the game for the Pepperdine University committed senior talent, who shared division MVP honors last season with the Padres’ Matt Maxon, a Stanford commit. It was another memorable moment for Horton, who pitched a perfect game earlier this season.
St. Francis led 5-1 through five innings, but the Padres scored twice in both the sixth and seven innings to knot the score.
Dononvan Dominguez had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored for the Sharks (9-7, 6-6). Nick Fantl had two hits and two RBI, and Javier Fonseca had two hits and scored twice. Noah Magana had a hit and scored twice.
Alex Hirschfield had two hits and two RBI to lead the Padres (12-5, 8-2), who are ranked No. 13 in the Central Coast Section by maxpreps.com. Sean Carr had two hits, including a solo home run, and Kaleb Herro had a hit, two RBI, and scored a run.
Fantl picked up the win in relief, and Kenny Sanchez took the loss.
St. Francis competes in the Central Coast Classic in Santa Maria on Wednesday through Friday.
Watsonville 22, at Seaside 0; 5 inn. >> Mathew Silva had three hits, three RBI, and scored three runs in the Wildcatz’s PCAL Cypress Division win Thursday.
Ben Miller had two hits, four RBI, and scored twice for the Wildcatz (9-9, 8-0). Rudy Valdez had two hits, one RBI, and scored three runs. Patrick Miller-Brown had a hit, one RBI, and scored three runs. Justin Curiel drew three walks, had one RBI, and scored three runs.
Silva earned the complete-game win. He gave up two hits and two walks, and struck out nine batters.
Watsonville hosts St. Monica (8-11) in a nonleague game on April 25 at 6 p.m.
High school softball
At Aptos 9, SLV 2 >> Sophomore Emma Burgueno had two hits, including a home run, three RBI, and scored twice in the Mariners’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League win Thursday.
Gwen Vaca had a hit, two RBI, and scored a run for the Mariners (8-5, 3-2). Bailey Fulton had a hit, one walk, and scored twice. Makenzie Lashley had two hits, one RBI, and scored a run.
Abi Krepelka had two hits, including a home run, and two RBI for the Cougars (6-6, 4-2). Sophia Sarmiento had two hits and scored a run.
On Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., Aptos hosts vs Soquel, while SLV plays at Harbor.
At Soquel 8, Santa Cruz 7 >> Carmela Menge’s game-winning hit drove in a pair of runs as the Knights (3-4, 2-4) rallied past the Cardinals (6-8, 4-2) in SCCAL play Thursday.
Men’s volleyball
Ownbey honored >> UC Santa Cruz middle blocker Kyle Ownbey, a 6-foot-4 sophomore out of Cupertino High, earned 2025 AVCA Division III All-Region IV honors.
Ownbey played in 94 for the Banana Slugs (19-8 overall), recorded 194 kills, and led the team with a .497 hitting percentage. Ownbey was second on the team in total blocks with 49, and made 42 assists.
Boys volleyball
At Santa Cruz 3, Aptos 0 >> Seniors Julien Pally and Leo Sapunor paced the Cardinals’ attack in their 25-13, 25-9, 25-18 sweep in SCCAL play Thursday.
Santa Cruz (20-2, 7-0) plays at Scotts Valley on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
At Soquel 3, Scotts Valley 0 >> The Knights earned a 25-19, 25-14, 25-17 sweep in SCCAL play Thursday.
Sophomore outside hitter Jake Locatelli had eight kills and three digs for the Falcons. Senior libero Neo Ciotti had eight serve receive passes and six digs. Sophomore outside hitter Ben Luckey had two serve receive passes and two digs.
College baseball
At Cabrillo 11, Gavilan 10; 13 inn. >> Adrian Castaneda scored on Nico Hilger’s single in the bottom of the 13th inning, and the Seahawks earned a walk-off win in their Coast Conference South Division game Thursday.
Castaneda finished with four hits, two RBI, and one run scored for the Seahawks (15-21, 8-9), who climbed back into third place in the standings. Carlos Cruz had four hits, two walks, one RBI, and scored twice. Diego Grabiel had three hits and three RBI. Oscar Knapp had three hits, two RBI, and scored a run. Kaiden Hoapili had two hits and scored three runs. Truett Ross had two hits and two RBI.
Noah Kang had three hits, including a three-run double for the Rams (9-28, 4-13). Ricky Wilkerson had four hits, one walk, two RBI, and scored a run.
Michael Balderas pitched a scoreless inning of relief and earned the win. Rams reliever Mason Pound pitched 1 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss.
The Seahawks, who have three games remaining in the regular season, host second-place Ohlone (30-7, 13-4) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

At Soquel 7, Aptos 0 >> The Knights earned singles wins from Benja Bellito, Hudson Ward, Colby Negro, and Cian Francis in their SCCAL sweep Thursday.
Nate Marcus and Toran Miller, Liam Stiller and Leo Hagedorn, and Matteo Arnulfo and Americo Castillo earned doubles wins for the Knights (7-0).
Boys golf
At SLV 176, Harbor 198 >> James Dahlen shot even-par 31 for medalist honors at Boulder Creek Golf & Country Club, and the repeat SCCAL champion Cougars shot their lowest score in their win Thursday.
Keenan Buntz (34), Garret Dahlen (36), Tanner Brewer (36), and Lochlin Bischofberger (39) also scored for the Cougars (9-0).
Kaden Dunton (32), Gunther Kruger (34), Kyler Samples (39), Niko Marinovik (46), and Jake Locknane (47) scored for the Pirates
On Tuesday, SLV hosts Scotts Valley at Boulder Creek at 3:30 p.m., and Harbor plays Santa Cruz at DeLaveaga Golf Course at 4 p.m.
At Aptos 221, Santa Cruz 242 >> Nick Bjorn shot 4-over-par 39 on the front nine for medalist honors at Seascape Golf Club, and the Mariners won their SCCAL match on Thursday.
Ben Nowark (44), Leland Blankenship (44), Mason Bloom (45), and Will Bartch (49) also scored for the Mariners (6-3).
Cliff Chesnut (40), Sam Wilkens (45), and Tobin McClendon (47) scored for the Cardinals, who also counted a 55, which was shot by both Santi Toledo and Gavin Eaton.

Soquel 198, Scotts Valley 207 >> Luke English and Mateo Adolfo each shot 37 to shared medalist honors on the front nine at DeLaveaga G.C. to lead the Knights to the win in their SCCAL finale on Thursday.
Cole Christensen (38), Riley Shank (43) and Malekai Mora (43) also scored for the Knights (5-5).
Seamus Drees (38), Adrian Creamer (41), Brogan Beasley (42), Zane Siechen (42), and Noah Tripp (44) scored for the Falcons (2-6).
College softball
Ohlone 14, at Cabrillo 6 >> Danielle Keller had a hit, one walk, and two RBI in the Seahawks’ Coast Conference loss Thursday.
Bella Fromel had two hits, one walk, and scored a run for the Seahawks (4-31-1, 1-12).
Alina Sanchez had two hits and four RBI for the Renegades (15-23, 3-10).
Sanchez earned the complete-game win, and Danielle Keller took the loss. Both pitchers gave up four earned runs.
Cabrillo closes its season at conference co-leader San Mateo (34-3, 11-2) on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
