MONTEREY >> The Monterey City Council’s next study session will be a field trip to the Monterey Sports Center, where they will have the opportunity to learn more about the facility and ask questions.

Council members will take a guided tour of the Sports Center 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Parks and Recreation Director Karen Larson, Sports Center Manager Bill Rothschild and other staff will be in attendance to highlight the operations and maintenance of the facility.

Public Works Director Andrea Renny will also brief the council on scheduled and future projects for the Sports Center.

“We’ll give them highlights of the facility, show them different rooms and talk about membership,” Larson said.

The council has been asking to take a joint trip to the Sports Center for the last year, since their last in-depth discussion about the facility in June 2023.

During that time the Sports Center provided in in-depth report about recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic and a list of projects for the future.

Today, staff say they are in a good place and are ready to take on more maintenance and renovation projects.

“We’re doing really well,” Larson said.

“Our membership is nearing pre-pandemic levels and our revenue has reached pre-pandemic levels. We also have a new staffing model where all of our employees are part-time.”

The tour will also highlight projects staff are working on, including getting a new de-humidifier, resurfacing the pool decks and re-plastering the pools.

Staff will also highlight their community services including the Sports Centers initiative with Montage Health.

“I’m hoping they’ll have a better understanding of the value of the Sports Center and the services it provides to the community,” Larson said.

“We have a variety of services and serve a broad age group from people under one year old to people in their 90s.”

There will be an opportunity for public comment at the end of the tour. Comments can be submitted online within 72 hours before the meeting at monterey.gov/Submitted-Comments.
