OAKLAND — A woman was killed and a man injured in a head-on traffic collision early Sunday in East Oakland that appears to have been alcohol-related, police said.
The name of the woman killed, a 28-year-old Oakland resident, was not immediately released.
The collision happened about 2:40 a.m. Sunday in the 6300 block of San Leandro Street.
Police said the woman was driving a Honda Civic eastbound in the westbound traffic lanes when it collided head-on with a Ford cargo van that was going westbound.
After the initial collision, a Nissan Altima that was traveling westbound on San Leandro Street was sideswiped by an Infiniti SUV that was also traveling westbound, police said. The Infiniti then hit the Honda while the woman was still inside. The Infiniti driver left the scene, police said.
The woman driving the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said an open container of alcohol was found inside the Honda and investigators said it appears alcohol was a factor in the initial collision.
The 66-year-old man driving the van was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, authorities said.
A detailed description of the Infiniti SUV driver was not released. Police were still searching for the driver and the vehicle on Monday.
