SANTA CRUZ >> The show must go on for Sylvan Music, which plans to continue with normal business hours Tuesday, only a couple days after a Lexus sedan plowed into the left side of its storefront, scattering bricks and glass all along the sidewalk and in parts of its carpeted interior.
Like any other Tuesday, Sylvan owner Mike Sparber told the Sentinel that the West Side hotspot for stringed musical instruments will flick on the lights and open its doors at 11 a.m. sharp.
“We are very lucky that no one was hurt and that the damage wasn’t more extensive,” Sparber wrote in an email message Monday. The crash occurred Sunday morning in Santa Cruz, which is outside of the store’s business hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.
A spokesperson for the Santa Cruz Police Department said the vehicle was traveling southbound on Bay Street before taking a left with a green light onto Mission Street. Based on the investigation as of Monday, law enforcement had determined that the collision was accidental and no drugs or alcohol were involved.
The store, featuring a collection of high quality guitars, mandolins, ukuleles, banjos, violins, dulcimers, harps and amplifiers, was founded in 1984 by master luthier Albert Markasky. After outgrowing its small space in downtown Santa Cruz, Sylvan moved to the building it currently inhabits at 1521 Mission Street in 1993.
