


Novato High senior Kekoa Madayag placed fourth at 113 pounds in the CIF State Tournament in Bakersfield on Saturday. Madayag, who was 1-1 in the championship bracket, won five consolation round bouts. He defeated Fountain Valley’s Anthony Lucio 6-3 to advance to the Saturday’s third-place bout. Madayag fell 5-2 to Buchanan’s Christopher Huerta Jr.
Madayag earned his ticket to the State championships with his title-winning effort at the North Coast Section tournament.
Meanwhile, the Hornets’ Luana Stathopoulos placed eighth in the girls 143-pound class. She was 4-6 overall at the State tournament. An 8-6 consolation win over Lowell’s Cora Cost on Saturday assured Stathopoulos would place, but she then suffered back-to-back losses to end her run.
Girls lacrosse
Novato High put together a solid finish for a 14-9 victory over Sonoma Valley on Saturday. Sophomore Ava Lawrence led the Hornets with seven goals, while junior Stella Pardi added five goals. Novato sophomore goalie Maya Mhlanga turned back a surging Dragons squad for the win.
Prep baseball
Cole Chamberlain had a big day at the plate to help power San Marin to a 8-0 victory over Petaluma on Saturday. The Mustangs junior was 3-for-4, wit ha home run, three RBI and two runs. Junior Anthony Scheppler also homered and drove in three runs for San Marin (1-1), which opens MCAL play Tuesday against San Rafael.
San Marin sophomore Sean McGrath went the distance, scattering four hits and striking out nine batters, for his first win of the season.
• Novato fell to Las Lomas, 3-1, despite a solid overall day. Senior Evan Black was 2-for-4. Freshman Julian Oliver drove in Griffin Vorhaus for the Hornets’ only run, which came in the sixth inning to cut the Knight’s lead in half. Las Lomas added another run in the seventh inning.
• Redwood scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Giants topped Sacred Heart 2-1 Saturday. The Giants (3-0) are scheduled to play at Petaluma on Thursday.
Women’s basketball
Dominican University of California capped the regular season with an 82-57 victory over the Academy of Art on Saturday as the Penguins (18-10, 15-6) celebrated Senior Day.
Redshirt senior Brittney Cedeno led the way for the Penguins, connecting for 15 points while adding four assists and a pair of steals. Sophomore Alaiyah San Juan and junior Jenna Duley notched 12 points each, while freshman Keyonee Neal finished with 10 points.
