A year ago, still on maternity leave and still unsure when she would play elite tennis again, Naomi Osaka visited the U.S. Open to appear with Michael Phelps for a discussion about mental health. While at the site, she sat in the stands to watch one of Coco Gauff’s matches.

Osaka also already was thinking about being back on a court at Flushing Meadows, so much so that she was pondering what she might want to wear to compete. And there she was Tuesday at Louis Armstrong Stadium, overpowering No. 10 seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2 while decked out, from her visor to her dress to the bows on her back and attached to her shoes, in lime green and playing very much like a two-time champion at the place and a former No. 1-ranked star.

“I feel like being able to be a part of (designing) my tennis outfits gives me, I would say, a different strength, especially the U.S. Open outfits. I feel like they are a little bit more flamboyant. When I was putting on my outfit today, I was, like, ‘Ah, I hope this isn’t too much,’” Osaka said with a smile. “Because I had the tutu, and then I had the bow jacket and it was green. I feel like everyone was staring at me.”

Osaka claimed U.S. Open titles in 2018 and 2020.

Also Tuesday, 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin beat 2021 U.S. Open winner Emma Raducanu 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Osaka on Thursday goes against 2023 French Open runner-up Karolina Muchova, a 6-3, 7-5 winner against Katie Volynets of the U.S.

Other women moving into the second round included No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who got past Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 7-6 (6), and past major champions Elena Rybakina and Caroline Wozniacki. No. 5 Jasmine Paolini, a finalist at the French Open and Wimbledon this year, beat 2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4, while No. 11 Danielle Collins’ Grand Slam singles career ended with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 loss to Caroline Dolehide in an all-American matchup. The 30-year-old Collins is retiring after this season.

Another American who recently announced her retirement, Shelby Rogers, lost the final match of her career by a 6-4, 6-3 score to No. 6 Jessica Pegula at night, after four-time major champion Carlos Alcaraz defeated qualifier Li Tu 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Pegula meets Kenin next.

Earlier in Ashe, No. 1 Jannik Sinner played his first match since news came out that he was cleared in a doping case involving two failed tests in March, and while he got off to a slow start, the 23-year-old Italian quickly bounced back to eliminate Mackie McDonald 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2.

Browns rookie Hall placed on commissioner’s exempt list

Browns rookie defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list on Tuesday while the NFL continues its investigation into a domestic violence charge filed against him.

Hall was arrested on Aug. 13 after his fiancee told police he threatened her with a gun during an altercation at the home they share in Avon, Ohio.

The 21-year-old Hall, a second-round pick from Ohio State, has continued to practice and played in Cleveland’s two exhibition games since the incident.

Hall posted $10,000 bond and was released following an arraignment in Avon Lake Municipal Court. He’s scheduled to be in court again on Sept. 10.

Hall could face discipline from the league if it determines that he violated its personal conduct policy.

Any player on the exempt list is prohibited from practicing or attending games.

• Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and his brother, former Eagles center Jason Kelce, are taking their popular “New Heights” podcast to Amazon’s Wondery under a three-year deal that gives the company exclusive advertising sales and distribution rights.

The financial terms of the deal were not immediately available, though some reports put the total at nine figures.

The deal, announced by Wondery on Tuesday, will begin with this week’s episode, which drops today.

• The Green Bay Packers have acquired quarterback Malik Willis, 25, from the Tennessee Titans for a 2025 seventh-round draft pick, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

ESPN first reported the trade.

Green Bay was lacking tested candidates to back up Jordan Love, who signed a four-year, $220 million contract extension this summer.

• The father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes pleaded guilty Tuesday to a drunken driving charge in Texas, according to court records.

Smith County District Court records show that Patrick Mahomes Sr., 54, pleaded guilty in Tyler to the driving while intoxicated charge made in February. The records do not provide details of the plea, but local media report a five-year suspended sentence was agreed upon.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23.

The charge was the third DWI charge against Mahomes Sr., a former Major League Baseball pitcher.

Thompson, two others added to U.S. Solheim Cup team

Lexi Thompson is playing in the Solheim Cup for the seventh straight year, one of three captain’s picks announced Tuesday as the Americans try to win back the cup from Europe.

Thompson first played the Solheim Cup in 2013 at age 18, making her the youngest American to compete since the matches began in 1990.

U.S. captain Stacy Lewis also chose Jennifer Kupcho and Sarah Schmelzel for the Sept. 13-15 matches at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

The seven players who automatically qualified are Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu, Lauren Coughlin, Ally Ewing, Allisen Corpuz, Megan Khang and Andrea Lee. Rose Zhang and Alison Lee qualified through the women’s world ranking.
