“Back to the Future”

July 8 to 20, Citizen Opera House

You made a musical out of a movie that made a time machine out of a Delorean! And you made it good! Great Scott! In an amazing twist, the Broadway musical version of “Back to the Future” has become a critical and commercial hit. The movie’s masterminds, Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis developed the show with ace songwriters Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard — don’t worry, while many of the songs are new, it does include “The Power of Love” and “Back in Time.” boston.broadway.com

“As You Like It”

Free Shakespeare returns to the Boston Common this summer for one of the Bard’s best comedies. Like many of the writer’s plays, everything gets twisted — gender roles, power, romance. You can expect the usual: disguises, redemption, reconciliation, and a pair of lovers. Bonus points: It’s got perhaps Shakespeare’s most famous line in “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Commshakes.org
