A Macomb County resident apparently died by suicide Wednesday morning after he jumped from a Detroit freeway overpass, according to Michigan State Police.

Troopers said the body of the 49-year-old man from Warren was discovered about 1:35 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 at West Vernor Highway on Detroit’s west side.

Dispatchers received several calls of a person lying with “his arms crossed over his chest” in the left lane of the freeway, said MSP F/Lt. Mike Shaw.

“It was determined from the on scene investigation that he had jumped from the Vernor overpass,” troopers said in a news release.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene, police added. MSP said the freeway was shut down for approximately three hours as troopers conducted their investigation.

The Macomb Daily generally does not report on suicides unless the act takes place in a public setting, as was the case here.

“Remember it is okay to not be okay,” Shaw said. “If you feel suicidal know there are many resources available to you. You can reach out to a friend, medical staff, police or clergy. You can also call or text the suicide hotline at 988.”
