JUST OUT & ABOUT AMONG FRIENDS

A surfer paddles his hydrofoil board past a raft of sea lions basking and foraging near the Indicators surf break between Lighthouse Point and Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz on Feb. 9. A group of sea lions is primarily called a colony when the group is on land and a raft when the group is in the water. During breeding season, these large, noisy groups are often referred to as a rookery. A smaller group consisting of one male and several females is called a harem.
