The Detroit Zoo recently welcomed a new arrival, a healthy baby chimpanzee.
The infant primate, a female, was born July 4 at the zoo in Royal Oak, according to zoo officials.
“It was a remarkable way for our primate care team to celebrate the holiday,” The Detroit Zoo said Thursday in a social media post.
The baby is the first for 34-year-old Nyani, who was also born at the Detroit Zoo.
“Nyani and her newborn are doing exceptionally well as they adjust to this new chapter together,” the zoo said.
Nyani and her baby — who has not yet been named — are currently bonding in a private space, away from the public area of their habitat. They are gradually being introduced to the zoo’s other chimps, according to the social media post.
“They’ll have access to public areas of their habitat once our animal care staff determines they’re ready,” the zoo said.
The Detroit Zoo is currently home to a troop of 12 chimpanzee, according to the zoo’s website. The youngest include Tai, born in 2023; Zane, born in 2020; and Jane, born in 2018.
The endangered mammals have a life expectancy around 41 years for females and 32 for males, according to the website.
The zoo said it will provide updates about the new arrival on its Facebook page.
According to Project ChimpCARE, an initiative of Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo, there are more than 1,200 chimpanzees currently living in the United States.
