Aryna Sabalenka beat Coco Gauff in straight sets to win her record-tying third Madrid Open on Saturday.

No. 1-ranked Sabalenka powered through the first set and edged the American in a tiebreaker for 6-3, 7-6 (3) on the outdoor clay court.

Sabalenka added to titles in Madrid in 2021 and 2023 and equaled Petra Kvitova’s tournament record. It was also Sabalenka’s third title of the season after Brisbane and Miami and her career 20th. She also pulled level with Gauff on head-to-head with five wins apiece.

The fourth-ranked Gauff could have risen to No. 2 with a victory. The 2023 U.S. Open champion had lost only one set this week until the final. Gauff’s great record in finals slipped to nine wins in 11.

Scheffler leads at Byron-Nelson >> Scottie Scheffler still has a six-shot lead at his hometown CJ Cup Byron Nelson after the rest of the field completed the weather-delayed second round.

The top-ranked player is 18 under with the low round each of the first two days, a 10-under 61 followed by a 63 that was interrupted halfway through by a six-hour weather delay. Scheffler’s 36-hole lead is the biggest in Nelson history.

Sam Stevens, a native of nearby Fort Worth now living in Wichita, Kansas, also finished his second round on Friday. He is 12 under after consecutive 65s. Stevens is bogey-free through two rounds for the first time in his 82 PGA Tour starts.

PGA Tour Champion Dent dies at 85 >> Jim Dent grew up in the caddie yards of Augusta, Georgia, eventually working at the Masters and honing his game at the municipal course known as “The Patch.” He went on to become one of the PGA Tour’s longest hitters and one of the top Black golfers of his generation.

Dent died on Friday at age 85, a week before his birthday, his grandson posted on Facebook. The PGA Tour said on its website that Dent suffered a stroke the day after Augusta National announced plans for Tiger Woods to design a par 3 course at The Patch.

Pirates fan who fell onto warning track is awake >> The man who fell from the top of a 21-foot-high wall onto the warning track at PNC Park during a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night is awake and alert.

The organizer of a GoFundMe page for Kavan Markwood, the 20-year-old who slipped off a railing and onto the field during the seventh inning of Pittsburgh’s 4-3 win over the Cubs, shared an update Saturday that Markwood is improving.

According to Jennifer Phillips, who is organizing the fundraiser, Markwood has made significant progress since being admitted to the trauma center at Allegheny General Hospital on Wednesday in critical condition.

Dodgers recall All-Star Kim >> The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled South Korean All-Star Hyeseong Kim and placed second baseman Tommy Edman on the injured list.

Kim agreed to a $12.5 million, three-year contract with the Dodgers on Jan. 3 and opened the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Edman was placed on the injured list, retroactive to Wednesday, after missing two games with a sore right ankle.

Kim, 26, has played eight seasons in South Korea, including the last six with the Seoul-based Kiwoom Heroes.

In 28 games with Oklahoma City, Kim hit .252 with five home runs, 19 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

Red Sox Casas to miss rest of season >> Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas suffered a ruptured tendon in his left knee and is out for the remainder of the season.

The 25-year-old Casas ruptured his patellar tendon running to first on a slow roller up the line and fell awkwardly in Boston’s victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. After laying on his back in pain — not moving the knee — he was carted off on a stretcher before being taken to a Boston hospital.

Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Casas, who remains in the hospital, will have surgery, but the date has not been determined.

Carmelo Anthony joins NBC as analyst >> Carmelo Anthony is joining NBC Sports as a studio analyst when NBC and Peacock begin their NBA coverage in October.

Anthony will be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in September.
