SALINAS >> Police safely arrested a burglary suspect after he barricaded himself in a home.

Early Friday at about 1:30 a.m., the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residential panic alarm on the 1000-block of San Miguel Canyon Road in Royal Oaks.

When the police arrived, one person fled the scene through the back of the house according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The other suspect, 23-year-old Eliseo Garcia from Aromas, barricaded himself inside a loft on the second floor of the house. The residents of the home were not there at the time.

Garcia proceeded to break several window screens in the room he was in, according to the Sheriff’s Office, then presented himself to the police and threatened to shoot himself.

The police deployed a drone to find Garcia, who still refused to exit the house. The drone picked up that Garcia, according to the Sheriff’s Office, appeared to be armed with a revolver-style handgun.

Deputies with the Crisis Negotiation Team were called to the scene, and were able to get Garcia to safely surrender after four hours of negotiations.

Once they had Garcia and searched the area, they found the weapon was a replica firearm.

Garcia was taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation then was booked into Monterey County Jail for burglary, obstructing a peace officer, posession of burglary tools and violation of probation.
