



Avri Finch and Treyson Keating recorded double-doubles, and the No. 4 seed UC Santa Cruz men’s basketball team beat No. 5 Warren Wilson 87-72 in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Thursday morning.
Finch had 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Keating had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Tyler Kessinger scored 13 points in 21 minutes off the bench, and Zino Okah made four of UCSC’s seven 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.
Eric DeBrine had nine points and 15 rebounds to help UCSC win the rebounding battle 61-25.
In the semifinals on Friday, UCSC (9-16) plays No. 1 Christopher Newport (22-3) at 11 a.m., and No. 2 Mary Washington (18-7) plays either No. 3 Salisbury or No. 6 Pratt Institute at 1 p.m.
Boys basketball
At Saint Ignatius 63, Santa Cruz 60, OT >> Ben Dotten had 30 points and eight rebounds, but the Cardinals lost their Pool A finale in overtime in the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs in San Francisco on Wednesday night.
Aden Cury had nine points, 13 rebounds and five steals for the Cardinals, co-champion of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League.
The teams were tied 56-all at the end of regulation.
Santa Cruz was 10-for-22 shooting from the free-throw line.
The No. 8 seed Cardinals finished 0-3 in Pool A, all against West Catholic Athletic League teams. They lost 63-51 at No. 1 Archbishop Mitty on Friday, and 65-53 at No. 4 Junipero Serra on Monday.
Pool A champion Serra (17-10) squares off against Pool B champ No. 7 Sacred Heart Cathedral (15-12) for the Open Division title at Santa Clara University’s Leavey Center on Friday at 8 p.m.
Santa Cruz (22-7) continues its postseason in the CIF NorCal playoffs on Tuesday. Brackets will be announced Sunday.
Surfing
SLO CAL Open at Morro Bay >> Santa Cruz’s John Mel advanced to the Round of 32 on Thursday at the World Surf League’s SLO CAL Open at Morro Bay, a 1,000-point Qualifying Series event.
Mel and Hagan Johnson each produced two-wave scores of 12.75 in 4- to 6-foot waves to advance from their four-surfer heat.
Santa Cruz’s Shaun Burns (11.40) won his Round of 96 heat to advance. In the Round of 64, Burns competes in Heat 7, and Santa Cruz’s Sam Coffey goes in Heat 10.
Santa Cruz’s Ben Coffey (9.60) took third in his Round of 96 heat and was eliminated. He tied for 65th place overall.
College baseball
At Cabrillo 10, West Valley 1 >> First baseman Nick Thomson had two hits, three RBI and scored a run in the Seahawks’ nonconference win Wednesday.
Dominic Giuffre had two hits, a walk, and scored twice for Cabrillo. Matt Lawton and Seita Shiratori each had two hits and a run scored. Rees Hall had an RBI and scored twice. Matt Morrison and Kawana Soares each had a pair of RBI.
Starting pitcher Bryce Liechty worked 5 2/3 innings and earned the win.
Cabrillo (6-6) faces West Valley (3-9) at Mission College in Santa Clara on Saturday at 1 p.m.
