The 49ers agreed Friday to a one-year deal with free agent cornerback Jack Jones.
Agent Drew Rosenhaus said the two sides agreed to the deal after Jones had a visit at the team’s facility.
The 28-year-old Jones was originally a fourth-round pick by New England in 2022 and spent time last season with Miami, where he started all 17 games with one interception, two forced fumbles and six passes defensed.
Jones has had his most success playing press man coverage, which should fit well in new coordinator Raheem Morris’ scheme with the 49ers. Jones adds depth for San Francisco behind starters Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green at outside cornerback.
Jones showed flashes as a rookie with New England, but got cut midway through his second season. He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders and made a big impact with two interception returns for TDs in back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City.
Jones wasn’t nearly as effective the following season when his aggressive play contributed to him allowing 10 touchdowns in coverage on the season, according to Pro Football Focus.
He was released by Las Vegas last April and signed before the season with Miami.
Jones has eight interceptions and 33 passes defensed in four seasons in the NFL. His four career pick-6s are the second-most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2022.
Earlier in the week, the 49ers agreed to terms with Cameron Sample, adding a potential rotational player to their defensive line.
Sample, 26, played in 14 games with two starts, two sacks and one forced fumble for the Cincinnati Bengals last season. The deal was first reported by NFL Network and confirmed by a league source. It was a comeback year for Sample, who lost his 2024 season to a torn Achilles tendon.
At 6-foot-3, 272 pounds, Sample can play both end and inside at tackle, which is a shared trait among defensive linemen preferred by the 49ers.
A fourth-round draft pick out of Tulane in 2021, Sample has played in 61 games with five starts, seven sacks and 85 total tackles.
Falcons RB returning
The Atlanta Falcons announced Friday they have exercised running back Bijan Robinson’s fifth-year option for the 2027 season.
Robinson, the No. 8 overall draft pick in 2023, was a 2025 first-team Associated Press All-Pro selection. He also was a Pro Bowl selection for the second consecutive season.
In 2025, Robinson’s third season, the running back became the third player in Falcons history to surpass 2,000 scrimmage yards. He led the league with 2,298 scrimmage yards, rushing for 1,478 yards with seven touchdowns and set career highs with 79 receptions for 820 yards and four touchdowns.
Cowboy arrested
Dallas Cowboys defensive back Markquese Bell has been arrested on drug possession charges in the Dallas area, according to online jail records posted Saturday.
Bell is facing counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana in Collin County, north of Dallas. Police didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. A Cowboys spokesman said the club was aware of the arrest and declined to comment.
