Utah QB Rising out for the season with lower leg injury

SALT LAKE CITY>> Utah quarterback Cam Rising is out for the season with a lower leg injury and coach Kyle Whittingham said Monday true freshman Isaac Wilson will be the Utes’ starter until further notice.

Rising was injured in Utah’s 27-19 loss to Arizona State on Friday. His leg was bent backward at an awkward angle following a hit on the Utes’ first drive. The seventh-year senior finished out the contest but struggled with his mobility and accuracy.

Utah released a statement from Whittingham on Monday evening confirming that Rising will miss the remainder of the 2024 season.

“During his time at Utah, Cam has been both a great player and leader for our program, and he will obviously be missed,” Whittingham said in the statement. “Any future developments concerning his collegiate eligibility will be addressed at a later date.”

OSU’s Gundy has eye injury after “run-in” with cattle

STILLWATER, Okla.>> Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said he “had a run-in” with his cattle last weekend, leaving him with an eye injury that caused him to hold his weekly media conference on Zoom without a camera.

“I’ve got a bad eye that I didn’t think would be particularly enjoyable for people when they were looking at my pretty face in a live interview,” Gundy joked.

Florida QB Mertz’s season, college career are over

GAINESVILLE, Fla.>> Florida coach Billy Napier said quarterback Graham Mertz will miss the remainder of the season because of a knee injury. The sixth-year senior from Overland, Kansas, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a 23-17 loss at Tennessee on Saturday.

76ers’ George leaves game

ATLANTA>> The Philadelphia 76ers’ prized free-agent acquisition Paul George left Monday’s preseason game against Atlanta with a hyperextended left knee.There was no immediate update how much time George might miss following his injury.

Ball set to play for first time in nearly 3 years

MILWAUKEE, Wis.>> The Chicago Bulls expect point guard Lonzo Ball to play for the first time in nearly three years after being sidelined because of a knee injury when they host Minnesota in a preseason game on Wednesday. Ball has not played since Jan. 14, 2022.

Hendrick declines to appeal Bowman’s disqualification

CHARLOTTE, N.C.>> Hendrick Motorsports said it will not appeal Alex Bowman’s disqualification at Charlotte Motor Speedway that eliminated him from NASCAR title contention.

Bowman finished Sunday’s race at The Roval in 18th-place — high enough to eliminate Joey Logano of Team Penske from the playoff field by four points. But NASCAR said the No. 48 Chevrolet failed a post-race inspection and disqualified Bowman for failing to meet minimum weight requirements.

Deegan moving to IndyCar

CHARLOTTE, N.C.>> Hailie Deegan is moving from NASCAR to IndyCar and plans to compete in the Indy NXT Series next year with HMD Motorsports. Deegan will drive the No. 38 entry for the full 14-race calendar of the series one step below IndyCar.

The 23-year-old has spent the last four years in NASCAR competing in both the Truck Series and the Xfinity Series. She’s never won at NASCAR’s national level.
