A Hinsdale couple was killed in a multivehicle crash Friday afternoon at 47th Street and Willow Springs Road in La Grange.
La Grange police said seven vehicles were involved in the 1:50 p.m. crash that claimed the lives of Brett and Melissa Lane.
Brett Lane was the chief technological officer for Panduit Corporation in Tinley Park, according to his obituary.
The Lanes, longtime residents of Hinsdale, leave behind five children, according to an obituary from Sullivan Funeral Home.
“Brett and Melissa were pillars of their community. Strong, fearless role models that touched the hearts of many,” the obituary stated.
Visitation for the Lanes was Tuesday at Sullivan Funeral Home in Hinsdale.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 306 W. Fourth St., Hinsdale.
Five other people were taken to hospitals after the crash. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
Five other individuals were transported to local hospitals and no information is available at this time.
Preliminary police reports state a white SUV was being driven north on Willow Springs Road at a high rate of speed.
“The white SUV struck several vehicles within and near the intersection of 47th Street and Willow Springs Road, including the vehicle occupied by Brett and Melissa Lane,” the report states.
The same white SUV was allegedly involved in two vehicle crashes in Western Springs earlier, which Western Springs police were responding to at the time, the report states.
“As police units approached the area, the crash at Willow Springs Road and 47th Street occurred, and police units immediately responded,” the report states. “The vehicle was not involved in a police pursuit at any point during this time.”
The police report indicated the La Grange Police Department is considering the possibility a medical event played a part in the conduct of the driver of the SUV, whose name was being withheld as of Tuesday.
“We’re doing a thorough investigation so there’s no conclusions at this point,” La Grange Police Chief Timothy Griffin said Monday night at a La Grange Village Board meeting.
Several nearby departments assisted in the care of victims and the Major Case Assistance Team is assisting in the investigation, La Grange police said.
