City to host paper, pumpkin recycling event

Residents of the city of Santa Cruz will be welcomed to bring confidential paper documents to be shredded and pumpkins to be recycled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 9 at the City Hall parking lot, 809 Center St., Santa Cruz.

Each person is allowed a maximum of three banker-size boxes (12 inches by 10 inches by 15 inches) or three brown paper bags of equivalent size of confidential paper documents. Documents are shredded at the event and then taken to a facility for recycling. Pumpkins will be processed through the city’s Food Scrap Collection Program.

The event is only for residents of the city of Santa Cruz and participants will be asked for proof of residency. Note that the event may end before 1 p.m. if the shredding trucks reach capacity.

Holiday wreath fundraiser for barbershop chorus

The Gold Standard Chorus of Santa Cruz is selling beautiful holiday wreaths, centerpieces, swags and other decorations to raise funds for expansion. Items include cranberry splash wreaths, sugarberry centerpieces, starlight tabletop trees, Victorian holiday door sprays and more. The non-profit organization showcases their four-part harmony in the community multiple times a year. Rehearsals take place every Wednesday evening at the Moose Lodge in Scotts Valley, and anyone interested in joining is invited to attend a rehearsal.

Medicare 2025 updates presentation

Join the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), a program of local nonprofit Senior Network Services, for two presentations on how to compare plans and hear what is new with Medicare in 2025.

Now is the time for Medicare beneficiaries to compare plans and ensure they have the right health and prescription drug coverage for 2025. The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

The London Nelson Community Center, 301 Center St., Santa Cruz, will be hosting the first presentation at 1-2 p.m. Wednesday. RTC to host passenger rail meetings

The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission has planned to host two upcoming informational community meetings where the Zero Emission Passenger Rail and Trail project concept development will be reviewed. The local transportation agency has invited the public to attend the meetings to hear project updates and ask questions.

The first session will happen from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday and will focus on project funding and service type, according to a release from the commission. It will include a presentation from Caltrans about the Federal Railroad Administration’s Corridor Identification and Development Program, which helps facilitate the development of new or improved intercity passenger rail service across the country.

The second meeting has been set during the same hours on Oct. 28. This session will feature a presentation from the project’s consultant team explaining the ridership modeling and analysis which will inform key project elements in the coming months.

Online and in-person options are available for both meetings.

The in-person event will be hosted in the commission’s downtown office at 1101 Pacific Ave., Suite 250A, Santa Cruz.

418 Project hosts Punk rock Día de Los Muertos

The 418 Project at 155 River St S., will be hosting “A Very DIY Punk/Rock Día de Los Muertos Benefit Show” Friday, Nov. 1 from 7-11 p.m. If you love punk and rock music and want to support and celebrate the local Latinx and artist communities, join the DIY benefit show centered on fun, high-energy music and togetherness.

Local artists will feature Maria & Johnny with Brazilian music, Latin punk band Fulminante, progressive rock band The Cohesion and The Mutilations, known for psychedelic garage rock. Face paint and accessories will be available at the venue, but attendees are encouraged to wear own festive attire.
