A 9-year-old boy riding a bicycle was injured when a police officer trying to stop a speeding driver collided with the bicyclist in Baldwin Park on Wednesday morning, police said.

He was hospitalized with injuries that Lt. Evan Martin described as non-life-threatening.

The child’s medical condition was unknown. The officer wasn’t hurt in the collision, Martin said.

Police had not found the speeding driver yet.

Shortly before 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the speeding driver didn’t stop at a red light and entered the intersection at Pacific and Vineland avenues, Martin said. The officer, who was going to stop the driver, made a left turn on a green light, he said.

As the officer completed the left turn, the officer collided with the bicyclist in the crosswalk, the lieutenant said.

The speeding driver fled.

Firefighters treated the boy at the scene and took him to a hospital.

At the request of the Police Department, the California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
