In the wake of last month’s protests, another demonstration is planned for Window on the Bay in Monterey on Thursday.
The local “Make Good Trouble” protest is expected to be one of thousands of demonstrations happening nationwide honoring the legacy of the late John Lewis, a leader of the Civil Rights movement. It was Lewis, who served in Congress representing Georgia for 33 years, who coined the phrase “make good trouble” when referring to protesting in support of civil rights. Lewis died July 17, 2020 at age 80. Organizers say Thursday’s demonstrations will be an opportunity to show that a strong majority of Americans support democracy,
The Monterey demonstration will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Window on the Bay, 717 Del Monte Ave. It is being sponsored by 50501 Monterey, Indivisible Monterey, Unite Monterey County and the NAACP Monterey County Branch. Among the speakers at the event will be Lyndon Tarver, president of the NAACP Monterey County Branch, and Kim Barber, Monterey councilmember and president of the Democratic Women of Monterey County.
The last major demonstration at Window on the Bay was the “No Kings” rally on June 14, which organizers estimated attracted more than 6,000 people. More than 1,500 are expected for Thursday’s protest.
