A 44-year-old motorist from Rochester Hills was fatally injured after he was involved in a three-vehicle crash in Macomb Township, authorities reported late Monday.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said the crash took place about 1:50 p.m. Monday on Garfield Road and Adelaide Drive, between 22 Mile and 23 Mile roads.
Witnesses told deputies a blue Jeep Compass was traveling at a high rate of speed on Adelaide through a residential neighborhood when he went through a stop sign at Garfield.
Deputies said the Jeep struck a semi-truck that was traveling north on Garfield. A third vehicle, a white Ford Escape, tried to avoid the crash, but also struck the truck, according to a news release.
“The driver (sole occupant) of the Jeep was pronounced deceased at the hospital,” deputies said in the release.
The semi-truck driver, who also was the sole occupant of his vehicle, and the Ford’s driver and passenger were all transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries, officials said.
Deputies did not release the name of the Jeep driver.
A portion of Garfield was closed to traffic as deputies conducted their investigation. The road was re-opened late Monday night, according to the Macomb County Department of Roads.
Investigators said they do not believe drinking was involved in the fatal crash.
The sheriff’s office’s investigation is ongoing, according to the release.
