Lakeview proved once again that the game isn’t over until the final horn sounds on Friday night.
The Huskies’ Alexa Stonik beat her defender along the sideline and slid a pass to teammate Maggie Kinsora, who booted a shot over the Chippewa Valley goalkeeper into the net with 25 seconds left to play, helping Lakeview salvage a 1-1 MAC White Division girls soccer tie against the host Big Reds.
“I feel like we stole something here a little bit,” Lakeview coach Simon Miners said. “Not sure if we deserve the point, but we’ll take it.
“We talked at halftime to get the girls wide and it went in one ear and out the other. We kept playing long balls over the top and it wasn’t working. But we finally connected, and I don’t know if we caught (Chippewa Valley) sleeping a little bit thinking there’s only 30 seconds to go and just need to clear it. The time was right, and we took advantage of it.”
Chippewa Valley coach Gerry Haggarty said he knows his team let one slip away.
“We’re pretty young, starting seven sophomores and freshmen,” Haggarty said. “It feels like a loss when you’re scored on (in) the last 25 seconds. We saw it coming. It just takes one breakdown. If the ball would have been cleared here or we put pressure on the girl with the ball, it doesn’t get through.”
Chippewa Valley received a bounce in its favor on its goal in the first half when a shot by Lily Peace was stopped by the Lakeview keeper, but the ball bounced off her hands right to Big Red Evi Carducci who knocked the rebound into the net with 18:31 left before intermission.
“Evi crashed the net and did what she was supposed to do to put pressure on the goalie,” Haggarty said. “Sometimes the goalie is looking at the girl and the ball at the same time and loses concentration. Then the ball is fumbled, and she was right there.”
Miners almost missed the Big Red goal.
“I thought my goalie had the ball in her hands and I turned around and the next thing I saw was somebody kicking the ball in,” Miners said.
Lakeview netminder Savannah Young made six saves in the tie, which left the Huskies’ record at 3-0-1 overall, 0-0-1 league.
“Savannah’s fine. She’s not really a goalie, but she has stepped up for us this season,” Miners said. “We beat two MAC Red teams and maybe we came into here thinking we are all that. Now we found out we’re not and we’re in a division where we have to scrap for a point.”
Chippewa Valley, which saw its record go to 0-1-2 overall, 0-0-2 league, was led by sophomore goalie Gracyn Carrier, who made nine saves in the match.
“Gracyn’s going to be really good,” Haggarty said. “We’ll build on this. The defense is pretty solid. Lakeview has been scoring a lot of goals. We have to work on finishing and scoring on our chances up top.”
Carrier was recently named a Division 1 all-state selection in basketball for the Big Reds.
