Jeff Ulbrich shook up the New York Jets’ struggling offense in his first major move as interim head coach.

Ulbrich announced Thursday he replaced Nathaniel Hackett with Todd Downing as the offensive play caller. Downing, the Jets’ passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, takes over as New York prepares for a showdown with the AFC East-rival Buffalo Bills on Monday night.

“After a lot of time to think about it, and I did not make this decision easily, by any means, I’m going to make Todd Downing the play caller for the New York Jets moving forward,” Ulbrich said. “This is more a byproduct of a different take on things. Not saying it’s a better or worse take on things, by any means.

“But it’s just a different take on things. A fresh approach.”

Hackett — who is close to quarterback Aaron Rodgers — chose to remain with the team and will retain the offensive coordinator title, but is taking a back seat to Downing in what is now an undefined role.

Ulbrich took over as head coach Tuesday after owner Woody Johnson fired Robert Saleh with the team off to a 2-3 start and on a two-game losing streak.

“I knew there’d be changes after they let Robert go,” Rodgers said. “I had conversations with Brick over last the two days. I knew that he was thinking about it, leaning toward it, and I told him I’d back him up whatever he decided.”

Steelers’ Wilson says he’s ready to play

Russell Wilson believes he’s ready to get back to work. What exactly that work might look like, not even he knows.

Though the nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback took some reps with the Pittsburgh Steelers starting offense this week for the first time since aggravating a calf injury in early September, it appears Justin Fields will get the nod once again when the Steelers (3-2) visit Las Vegas (2-3) on Sunday.

Asked what his expectations are, Wilson laughed and said “that’s a big question.”

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin indicated the 35-year-old Wilson would have to check multiple boxes before being made active for the first time this season. Perhaps the most important one is being mobile enough to protect himself, something Wilson believes he’s been able to do during practice this week.

Jaguars’ London flight delayed by hurricane

The Jacksonville Jaguars plan to arrive in London later than expected Friday because of Hurricane Milton, the team confirmed ahead of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

A team spokesperson said on Thursday that the Jaguars’ departure time has been “slightly” delayed.

The hurricane smashed into Florida, making landfall along the Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm.

The Jaguars canceled a Friday press conference at the team hotel outside London and rescheduled it for Saturday morning. They play the Bears the next day at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The NFL said in a statement that, “No changes are expected to Sunday’s schedule.”
