


Two-way center Quinten Post scored a game-high 24 points, but Santa Cruz Warriors lost 120-108, to the San Diego Clippers at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Sunday night to close play in the Tip-Off Tournament.
Santa Cruz competes in the G League Winter Showcase, held in Orlando, Florida, on Thursday through Sunday.
Forward Kevin Knox II had 20 points, five rebounds, and two steals for the Warriors (6-8). Forward Gui Santos, on assignment from Golden State, finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Forward Jackson Rowe had 15 points and nine rebounds in his first game back from injury, and forward Blake Hinson rounded out the scoring for the Warriors with 13 points off the bench.Forward Braxton Key led the San Diego Clippers (9-5) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Guard RayJ Dennis had 15 points and seven assists. Two-way guard Trentyn Flowers and guard Nate Darling both came off the bench and each scored 15 points. Forward Tosan Evbuomwan had 10 points and five rebounds.
Following the G League Winter Showcase, the Warriors will open the regular season on a seven-game road trip, starting with a back-to-back series against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Dec. 27 and 28.
Women’s volleyball
Houston, UCSC part ways >> Gabrielle Houston will not be returning as head coach of the Banana Slugs in 2025, after a mutual agreement to part ways.
Houston, named the Coast-To-Coast Conference Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2021 and ’22, compiled a record of 90-74 during her six seasons at the helm.
UCSC went 17-10 this season.
The team’s best season under Houston came in 2022, when the Banana Slugs went 19-6 and qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament, the program’s first trip to the tournament since 2015.
“I have truly enjoyed my coaching career at UC Santa Cruz and my experience wouldn’t have been the same without all the guidance and support of my colleagues,” Houston told goslugs.com. “The highlight however is the amazing student-athletes that we have the opportunity to coach. It has been an honor to be part of the Banana Slug Family. Once a Slug, always a Slug!”
UCSC announced on its athletics website that a national search for the program’s next head coach will begin immediately.
Men’s basketball
UC Santa Cruz 74, at Caltech 68 >> Zino Okah and Joseph Espy each scored 15 points, and the Banana Slugs held on to secure a narrow win in Pasadena on Sunday.
UCSC led by as many as 17 points early in the second half.
Espy also had eight rebounds and two blocks, and Okah had five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Reserve Caden Breznikar scored 13 points in 23 minutes off the bench.
Espy was 6-of-8 shooting from the free-throw line, helping UCSC go 22 of 28 from the line.
The Banana Slugs shot 44.2% (23 of 52) from the field, and 23.1% (6 of 26) from beyond the arc.
Freshman guard Chase Williamson had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Beavers (0-8), who nearly snapped their 28-game losing streak that dates back to last season.
Junior guard Noah Hicks had 20 points and nine rebounds for Caltech, and freshman center Stuart Florescu scored 12 points.
UCSC (7-5) plays at Chapman (7-1) on Monday at 5 p.m.
Women’s basketball
At Cabrillo 62, Reedley 50 >> Freshman forward Gabby Brooks made five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points, and the Seahawks closed play in the Aaron Short Memorial Tournament with a 3-0 record on Sunday.
Sophomore guard Jade Crum scored 11 points for Cabrillo (7-3), which led 35-17 at the half. Freshman forward Gabriella Dela Cruz and sophomore center Lily Thayer each scored eight points.
Freshman guard Taylor Sutherland scored 17 points to lead the Tigers (6-6). Sophomore guard Jacqueline Ruiz chipped in with eight points.
Cabrillo hosts Siskiyous (6-5) on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
