Lindsey Vonn will return to World Cup ski racing next weekend for two super-G events in St. Moritz, Switzerland, as she continues her comeback at 40 years old.

Vonn teased her return in an Instagram post through her sponsor, Red Bull, on Friday. She said: “My body is finally put back together. I hear St. Moritz is pretty nice this time of year.” The U.S. Ski Team then confirmed she will race in St. Moritz.

She’s won five of her 82 World Cup races on the course at St. Moritz. There will be super-G competitions next Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s the coolest thing ever,” said Picabo Street, a two-time Olympic medalist and Vonn’s former teammate. “I’m not surprised at all. I’ve seen her intermittently and she’s stayed in great shape. She is the hardest working person I’ve met in my life — period.”

It will be Vonn’s first major race since February 2019, when she took third in the downhill in the world championships in Sweden. An assortment of injuries, including to her knee, sent her into retirement. But a partial knee replacement last April has her feeling good enough again to give racing another chance.

When Vonn left the tour, she had 82 World Cup wins — the record for a woman at the time and within reach of the all-time Alpine mark of 86 held by Swedish standout Ingemar Stenmark. The women’s record held by Vonn was eclipsed in January 2023 by Mikaela Shiffrin, whose 99 wins are more than any Alpine ski racer in the history of the sport.

SWIMMING

American swimmer Gretchen Walsh set three more world records at the world short course championships in Budapest, Hungary. She lowered the 100-meter individual medley time to 55.11 seconds in the final, and the 100 butterfly record twice.

In the heats, Walsh broke Canadian Margaret Mac Neil’s mark of 54.05 from 2022 to 53.24. Then she dropped it again in the evening semifinals to 52.87. Walsh has seven world marks in Budapest this week.

The U.S. men’s 4x200 relay team achieved two world marks in the same final. The team clocked a winning 6:40.51, slashing nearly 4 seconds off its own record from the last championships in 2022 in Melbourne, Australia.

Also, Luke Hobson on the lead-off leg set the individual 200 freestyle world record that Peter Biedermann of Germany held since 2009.

Americans also claimed the day’s other world records: Regan Smith won the women’s 50 backstroke final in a world record time of 25.23, and Kate Douglass improved her own world mark in the 200 breaststroke from October to 2:12.50.

The 25-meter pool is half the length of an Olympic pool.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Dick Vitale said he’s cancer-free after his fourth bout with the disease in just more than three years.

The 85-year-old ESPN college basketball analyst announced on social media that he got the news after a morning scan.

Vitale had surgery in the summer to remove cancerous lymph nodes from his neck. He was previously treated for melanoma and lymphoma, and had radiation treatments last year for vocal cord cancer.

The Basketball Hall of Famer has been with ESPN since 1979, the year the network launched. The former college and NBA coach called ESPN’s first college basketball broadcast.

TCU leading scorer Frankie Collins (11.2 points per game) will miss the rest of the season because of a broken bone in his left foot, the school said.

GOLF

UCLA alums Jake Knapp and Patty Tavatanakit birdied the entire front nine in a scramble format and finished eagle-birdie for a 14-under 58, giving them a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Grant Thornton Invitational in Naples, Fla.

The tournament has 16 two-player teams from the PGA Tour and the LPGA, the second year of the mixed-team format.

The Canadian duo of Brooke Henderson and Corey Conners had two late eagles and narrowly missed a birdie on the 18th hole of Tiburon Golf Club. They had to settle for a 59, tied with Akshay Bhatia and Jennifer Kupcho.

Marcus Kinhult of Sweden shot a 4-under 68 to take a three-shot lead after the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship in Malelane, South Africa.

Kinhult entered the day tied for second place after a 65 in the opening round at Leopard Creek Country Club. He added seven birdies to go with three bogeys to move top of the leaderboard.

Dean Burmester, Dale Whitnell and Andrea Pavan are his nearest chasers.

SOCCER

The Vancouver Whitecaps are up for sale, the Major League Soccer team’s current ownership group announced.

In a release issued by the club, the group said “it is the right time for an owner with the platform, resources and ambition to enhance the club’s ability to compete at the highest levels of MLS and steward the club in realizing its significant potential.”

Greg Kerfoot has been owner of the club since 2002, when it was part of the North American Soccer League. Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett and former NBA star Steve Nash joined Kerfoot in 2008, and the Whitecaps became part of MLS in 2011.

The Whitecaps went 13-13-8 during the 2024 regular season before downing the Portland Timbers in a wild-card game. After Vancouver fell to LAFC in the first round of the playoffs, coach Vanni Sartini was fired.
