The Chicago Bulls will be a bit short-handed for their final two exhibition games against the Oklahoma City Thunder this week, with a combination of injuries and COVID-19-related concerns keeping six players from making the trip.

The Bulls play the Thunder on Wednesday and Friday and will be without guard Garrett Temple (self-isolating after a positive COVID-19 test) and forwards Thaddeus Young (lower left leg infection) and Denzel Valentine (left hamstring strain). Three more players — point guard Tomas Satoransky and two-way players Adam Mokoka and Devon Dotson — are listed as not with the team.

Satoransky and Dotson were late scratches from Sunday’s game against the Houston Rockets with what the team called an “excused absence.” That appears to be the team’s catchall term for something related to COVID-19 but does not necessarily mean the players themselves tested positive. Noah Vonleh, whom the Bulls waived, revealed Monday that he tested positive for COVID-19.

It’s unclear exactly what kind of exposure each player might have had or which protocols are in play, especially considering Luke Kornet, who also missed Sunday’s game with an “excused absence,” will make the trip to Oklahoma City.

Mokoka, who is from France, has been away from the team since last week after travel issues apparently delayed his arrival and he also had some sort of contact with the virus — although coach Billy Donovan’s answer last week about Mokoka’s status was vague.

Temple, Young and Valentine are three of the most veteran players on this young Bulls roster, and it’s fair to wonder about their status for the Dec. 23 season opener against the Atlanta Hawks at the United Center.

Temple had been feeling better and hoped to return to the team sometime last week, but he still has not cleared league protocols to return to practice and Donovan has not given a timeline for his return.

Young and Valentine will miss all four preseason games because of their injuries, and Valentine, who suffered his injury in November, has not practiced at all.

“It’s not even just us, I think it’s every team,” Donovan said. “If you look at the NFL and college, we’re all dealing with different situations, different circumstances.

“So you’ve got to be able to deal with the uncertainty, deal with the confusion, deal with guys being in different roles, having to do different things and you have to try to make the most of it.”
