A Liivonia husband and wife accused of operating a human trafficking operation out of multiple massage parlors are out of custody — with bonds markedly different — and scheduled to return to 47th District Court in Farmington Hills next month.
As previously reported, Paul Katterman, 57, was charged this week with five crimes: human trafficking enterprise resulting in commercial sexual activity, human trafficking enterprise, keeping a house of prostitution, conducting a criminal enterprise, and failure to file taxes/filing a false tax return.
His charges were filed a few weeks after his wife, Zixuan Wan, 44, was arrested. She’s facing the same charges as Katterman, as well as second-degree money laundering. While Magistrate Michael Sawicky assigned Wan a $100,000 personal bond at her arraignment last month — meaning no cash or surety had to be posted for her to stay out of jail for now — Judge James Brady decided on a more severe bond for Katterman: $50,000 cash or surety. Katterman posted bond April 23, the same day he was arraigned.
According to Farmington Hills Police Department, an investigation stretching several months revealed the couple was running a criminal enterprise at massage parlors where the victims were allegedly living and forced to work long hours for little or no pay,
Prior to Katterman’s arrest, Wan had been scheduled for a preliminary exam on April 23, but that’s off the table for now; instead, the couple is scheduled to appear before Judge Marla Parker on May 2 for a pre-exam conference.
If convicted, Katterman and Wan could face multiple years in prison and hefty fines.
