Former University of Minnesota diver Sarah Bacon has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics in two events after the diving trials in Tennessee on Saturday.
Bacon, who won five NCAA titles as the most decorated female diver in Gophers’ history, is an Olympic qualifier for the first time in her career.
She will compete in the 3-meter springboard and the 3M synchronized event with Kassidy Cook.
Meanwhile, Caeleb Dressel locked up his second individual race in Paris with a victory in the men’s 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials Saturday night. Dressel followed up his triumph in the 50 freestyle with a winning time of 50.19 seconds, giving him a chance to defend another of the gold medals he captured at the 2021 Tokyo Games.
Katie Douglass locked up her third individual event at the Olympics with a victory in the 200-meter individual medley.
Kaite Ledecky romped to her fourth victory of the trials, winning the 800 freestyle in 8 minutes, 14.12 seconds.
Ledecky plans to drop the 200 freestyle from her Olympic program, but will be competing in the 400, 800 and 1,500 free, as well as the 4x200 free relay.

Aurora keeps rolling with win over Chicago City
Mariah Nguyen scored twice, Katelyn Duong and Kelis Barton also scored and the Minnesota Aurora beat Chicago City 4-1 on Saturday at TCO Stadium in Eagan. The win puts Minnesota at 8-0-2, remaining first in the Heartland Division.
“I love our mentality right now, we’ve been building on that,” Aurora sporting director and coach Colette Montgomery said in a press release by the team. “Chicago City is a great team, well coached, and tactically made good decisions. We knew it was going to be a tough game. I’m incredibly proud of the mental performance today, especially in the driving rain. Thank you to all the fans that came out, even though it was a rainy day.”
Duong scored less than two minutes into the game on a free kick for Minnesota, which led 2-0 at halftime. Nguyen’s goal, deflecting off a defender, was the second goal.
After Chicago City scored 11 minutes into the second half, the Aurora answered seconds later. Saige Wims won possession following a kickoff and passed to Nguyen going down the middle.
Barton came off the bench and scored the fourth goal on an assist from Duong.
There are two regular season games left for the Aurora, road games at Bavarian United on June 27 and RKC Third Coast on June 29.
Fans interrupt game to approach Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo should consider himself lucky to have come to no harm after being confronted on the field by four supporters who wanted selfies during a European Championship match on Saturday, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said.
The alarming string of security breaches happened in the second half of Portugal’s 3-0 win over Turkey in Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion.
Ronaldo was happy to pose for a selfie with a young fan who evaded stewards to get on the field in the 69th minute before whipping out his cell phone.
However, Ronaldo was clearly unhappy when two more people tried to do the same in the final minutes of the game. Then another person — wearing a red Portugal jersey — got close to the 39-year-old striker for a photograph moments after the final whistle.

Bell stays undefeated in NASCAR Xfinity series
Christopher Bell used a three-wide, last-lap pass on Saturday to drive away and win the NASCAR Xfinity Series race for the fourth straight time at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
The 29-year-old Bell needed three extra laps on the 1.058-mile track but remained undefeated at New Hampshire in the Xfinity Series and scored another win for Joe Gibbs Racing in the No. 20 Toyota. The 20 team behind crew chief Tyler Allen has won four times this season with four drivers: John Hunter Nemechek, Aric Almirola, Ryan Truex and Bell.
Bell led 43 of 203 laps and added this checkered flag to his collection of Xfinity wins at New Hampshire in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
Sheldon Creed was second and Cole Custer third, both drivers caught up in Bell’s thrilling pass and both drivers fell just shy of keeping Bell out of victory lane.
