A former four-star recruit and familiar name to basketball fans in Colorado will be joining the Colorado State men’s basketball team, a source confirmed to the Reporter-Herald on Tuesday.
Carey Booth, son of current Denver Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth, has committed to CSU through the transfer portal after playing last season at Illinois. In his sophomore season with the Illini, the 6-foot-10, 215-pound forward played 21 minutes and averaged just over a point a game in limited action. As a freshman at Notre Dame, he played in 33 games, starting 19 for the Fighting Irish. He averaged 6.1 points and 4.5 rebounds.
Out of high school, Booth was ranked as a four-star recruit by 247Sports and was the No. 55 player in the nation in his class. Before playing his final high school season at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, he played three seasons at Cherry Creek High School.
Booth was a target of the Rams last year after he entered the portal, and he even took a recruiting visit to CSU, but he eventually chose to go to Illinois. CSU also recruited him out of high school.
The report of Booth’s commitment to CSU comes the same day a trio of Rams have reportedly entered the portal.
Travis Branham of 247Sports was the first to report Tuesday that starting forward Jaylen Crocker-Johnson has entered the portal.
In his only season at CSU after transferring from Little Rock, where he was the Ohio Valley Conference freshman of the year, he played in 36 games including 29 starts. Crocker-Johnson averaged nine points and 4.4 rebounds a game.
It was also reported by 247Sports that Crocker-Johnson intends to transfer to Minnesota to join former CSU head coach Niko Medved.
Also Tuesday, VerbalCommits.com reported that redshirt sophomore guard Luke Murphy and graduate guard Keshawn Williams have also entered the transfer portal.
Williams, who has been granted a sixth year of eligibility for a medical redshirt, played in 36 games for the Rams last season. He averaged 5.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in his only season at CSU. He played three seasons at Northern Illinois before transferring to CSU.
A former walk-on, Murphy played only 14 minutes for the Rams last season and didn’t score a point. During the 2023-24 season, he scored two points in six minutes of court time.
Crocker-Johnson, Williams and Murphy join former teammates Jaden Steppe, who announced his portal entry via social media Monday, and Kyan Evans, who reportedly entered the portal on Saturday, as five members of the 2024-25 team who intend to transfer
