FREDERICK >> In a game that took over one week to complete, Holy Family baseball didn’t waste much time getting ahead of Frederick on Saturday.
Nine days after weather limited the two Granite Peaks League foes to one scoreless inning on April 24, the final six innings Saturday were all Tigers. Sophomore Austin Mireiter twirled a complete-game shutout, and Holy Family’s offense provided ample insurance en route to a 7-0 road victory.
Holy Family (13-6, 7-4 Granite Peaks) is now riding a six-game winning streak with playoff baseball on the horizon.
“We concentrate on one game at a time,” Holy Family head coach Marc Cowell said. “We want to get better each game. I think today was just another one of those days that we accomplished that goal. We played a really good game from hitting, pitching and defense. It seemed to all be there today.”
Including his one inning on April 24, Mireiter struck out eight Golden Eagles and allowed only two hits, earning his third career win on the mound. Equally as impressive, the right-hander walked only one batter across his seven-inning masterpiece.
“This was probably the best they worked all year,” Mireiter said of his off-speed pitches. “My fastball felt good, I was spotting it. It was just a good day. Pretty much everything was working.”
Holy Family got on the board in the third inning with help from its bottom two hitters. Left fielder Nick Leopardi and shortstop Isaiah Sandoval each singled to begin the inning before swiping second and third base, respectively. From there, center fielder Dustin Bennett scored Leopardi on a sacrifice fly, and designated hitter Kaden Hopkin followed with an RBI double to score Sandoval.
Both freshmen, Leopardi and Hopkin combined for three hits, two RBIs, four stolen bases and two runs scored.
“We’ve got some great freshmen and great sophomores,” Cowell said. “They’re contributing in big ways this year. We’re thrilled about that, and we’re gonna be thrilled to have them here three more years.”
Holy Family, the defending Class 4A state champions, later added one run in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.
“We’re playing with a lot of fun now,” Mireiter said. “Earlier in the season, we were just kind of tight and trying too hard. But now we’re just having fun at practice and games.”
Frederick now stands 8-13 (3-8 Granite Peaks) and has lost six of its past seven. While the past few weeks haven’t been easy, the Golden Eagles haven’t lost confidence.
“We’re always going to have games that don’t go our way like that one did, but we did a good job sticking together as a team,” said senior shortstop Alex Clapp, who doubled in the sixth. “I think that’s something we could bring into any game we have. Obviously, we didn’t hit the ball how we wanted, but we did pitch well, and we stayed together through all the adversity we faced.”
As Clapp noted, senior Nate Rapp pitched better than the final score may have indicated. The southpaw was charged with four earned runs and struck out five in six innings pitched.
With four regular season games remaining, Holy Family stands No. 9 in CHSAA’s Class 4A rankings, positioning the Tigers to reach the 32-team regional field.
“We’ve got a lot of momentum,” Cowell said. “I think if we keep focusing one game at a time and don’t get too far out ahead of ourselves, I think we can keep building that momentum. And then we’ll see how far we can ride that come postseason.”
Holy Family will look for its seventh straight win against visiting Skyline on Monday. Frederick is set to host Legacy on Tuesday.
