Jackson Merrill hit a two-run homer and the San Diego Padres started 7-0 for the first time in their 57-season history by beating the visiting Cleveland Guardians 5-2 on Wednesday.

Fernando Tatis Jr. raced home on the back end of a double steal to start the scoring in the four-run third inning for the Padres, whose previous best start was 4-0 in 1984, when they went to their first World Series.

The Padres’ hot start includes sweeping playoff teams from last year. Before taking three from the Guardians, the Padres swept a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves.

Luis Arraez homered leading off the seventh for San Diego.

Dylan Cease (1-0) held the Guardians to one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings, struck out seven and walked one.

Giants 6, Astros 3: Wilmer Flores homered again and Luis Matos and LaMonte Wade Jr. also went deep to lead San Francisco to a win at Houston that completed a three-game sweep.

It’s the fourth home run this season for Flores, who hit just four in 71 games last season.

Flores got things going with his two-run shot off Framber Valdez (1-1) in the first.

Valdez allowed four hits and five runs with nine strikeouts in five innings after throwing seven scoreless frames on opening day.

Diamondbacks 4, Yankees 3: Zac Gallen tied his career high with 13 strikeouts and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a two-run homer in the first off Carlos Rodón that started Arizona to the road win.

Gallen (1-1) rebounded from an opening day loss to the Chicago Cubs by allowing three hits with no walks.

A.J. Puk allowed Anthony Volpe’s opposite-field three-run homer in the ninth, then retired Austin Wells on a foulout and struck out Jasson Domínguez for the saves.

Aaron Judge had three of the Yankees’ 16 strikeouts.

Cubs 10, Athletics 2: Seiya Suzuki homered twice and drove in five runs as Chicago beat the A’s to complete a three-game sweep in West Sacramento.

Matt Shaw added two RBI singles for the Cubs, who outscored the A’s 35-9 in the first major league series played at Sutter Health Park.

Suzuki hit a three-run homer in the second inning. He went deep again leading off the fourth before adding a late RBI single.

Jacob Wilson had three of the A’s five hits and Brent Rooker hit a two-run homer against Jameson Taillon (1-1) as the hosts lost their fourth straight game. Taillon struck out seven over six innings.

Phillies 5, Rockies 1: Zack Wheeler struck out 10 in seven innings and Trea Turner had three hits and an RBI in his return to the starting lineup as Philadelphia defeated visiting Colorado.

Wheeler (1-0) allowed just one run and three hits.

Edmundo Sosa also had three hits and drove in two runs.

Mariners 3, Tigers 2: Victor Robles hit a two-RBI double, Dylan Moore homered and host Seattle edged Detroit and American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.

Luis Castillo (1-1) went seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Skubal (0-2) left with two outs in the fifth after giving up three runs, six hits and three walks while striking out eight.

Rangers 1, Reds 0: Jack Leiter shut Cincinnati down for the second game in a row and Texas took the three-game series.

The Rangers, who also won 1-0 on Tuesday, were outscored 14-5 in the three games but still won the series.

Leiter (2-0) retired the first 11 Reds batters until Elly De La Cruz doubled. He left after the fifth inning with a blister on his pitching hand but still tied his career high with six strikeouts.

Josh Smith’s two-out double in the fourth scored Joc Pederson with the only run of the game off Hunter Greene (0-1), who allowed two hits in seven innings.

Jacob Webb, Robert Garcia, Chris Martin and Luke Jackson, who earned his third save, backed up Leiter with four scoreless innings.

Red Sox 3, Orioles 0: Garrett Crochet pitched eight innings and visiting Boston blanked Baltimore.

Trevor Story homered and Rafael Devers finally broke through with his first two hits of the season, including an RBI double in the fifth.

Crochet allowed four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.

Mets 6, Marlins 5 (11): Pete Alonso launched a three-run homer that tied the score with two outs in the eighth and New York scored twice in the 11th to win at Miami.

Alonso also doubled twice and finished with four RBIs.

Blue Jays 4, Nationals 2: Easton Lucas allowed one hit over five scoreless innings in his first major league start, and Toronto defeated Washington to complete a three-game home sweep.

Lucas (1-0) struck out three and walked two in a composed 74-pitch outing.

Filling in for the injured Max Scherzer, the 6-foot-4 left-hander out of Grace Brethren High School was making his 15th appearance in the majors.

Brewers 3, Royals 2 (11): Brice Turang dropped a perfect bunt to score Oliver Dunn in the bottom of the 11th and Milwaukee beat Kansas City.

Jackson Chourio, who homered earlier, doubled off Royals reliever Carlos Estévez in the bottom of the 10th and drove in Turang to tie the game at 2.

Pirates 4, Rays 2: Paul Skenes needed nearly three innings to warm up Wednesday, then struck out six over seven innings and visiting Pittsburgh beat Tampa Bay.
