Sunrise Home, San Rafael’s popular 30,000-square-foot home furnishings store, is celebrating its 49th anniversary this year.

“We’re always looking for quality and design, comfort and longevity,” said Annie Bowman, who founded Sunrise Home in 1977. “Our offerings are intended to be investment furnishings that will go the distance long after trends have come and gone.”

These days, Bowman has seen the public come back around to that way of thinking, too.

“People seem to have adopted the ‘do it once and do it right’ culture and have gravitated away from the ‘fast shopping’ and ‘future landfill’ mode of purchasing, which is so healthy and intelligent,” she said.

“We are also seeing a return to customers wanting to know where their furniture is from and who made it and enjoying the stories behind the collection. They return time and again because they know who we are, and they don’t want to shop in chain or big-box stores.”

She’s proud of the fact that “90% of our upholstered goods — sofas, chairs, sectionals and chaises — are all crafted in American-made, family-operated factories.” Many of the casework pieces, including tables, cabinets and beds, are produced in collaboration with Amish families.

Among the company names on her showroom floor are higher-end and long-established brands such as Stickley, Lee, American Leather, Hickory Chair and Century.

“We have worked with almost all of these various factories for over 40 years,” she said. “We visit each of our factories and even send our staff for immersive education.”

Customers can also get help from Sunrise Home’s in-house designers.

“Our design team is incredibly well-trained and experienced — I think they are truly exceptional,” she said. “They’re passionate about design and love developing relationships with their clients.”

To celebrate its annual trip around the sun, Sunrise Home is offering a 25% discount off any of Sunrise Home’s upholstered furniture collections. Sunrise Partners will receive 30% off the items. The sale takes place now through March 29.According to Bowman, the Sunrise Partners program offers a 20% discount off “just about anything in store, and every time we have a promotion, such as our birthday promotion, partners receive an additional 5% off, and also there are lots of monthly treats.”

The program costs $200, and membership is valid for two years.
