OAKLAND >> A dispute at a West Oakland park Saturday afternoon led to a struggle over a gun that left one man shot and another man also hospitalized, authorities said.
The shooting was reported about 2:40 p.m. on the 18th Street side of DeFremery Park between Adeline and Poplar streets.
Initial reports indicate that two men got into an altercation near the skateboard park and the clash carried over to an area near the basketball courts, police said.
Police said the two men were not skateboarders and that it was not clear if they knew each other before the Saturday confrontation. At some point, one of the men brandished a handgun and the two fought over it.
In the heat of the struggle, the man who brought the gun was shot in the abdomen, while the other man suffered cuts and bruises, police said.
Both men were found in the park by responding police officers and taken to a hospital.
No one else in the park was injured and police said the gun was recovered.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing; anyone with information for police can contact 510-238-3426.
