Willson Contreras had an RBI single to center field off Brenan Hanifee to score Victor Scott II in the sixth and cut the Tigers’ lead to 3-1. Dennis Santana worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save as the Pirates took two of three from the Reds. Henry Davis had two hits for the Pirates, including an RBI-single in the fourth off Brady Singer (5-3). Pirates RHP pitcher Jared Jones underwent elbow surgery and will not return in 2025. The 23-year-old Jones initially complained of elbow pain in mid-March. The decision to have surgery came after Jones dealt with discomfort during his rehab. The extent of the damage to the elbow wasn’t initially known. Though the team hasn’t put a firm timetable on a possible return, Jones will be out for at least the remainder of this season. Jones made the Pirates out of spring training in 2024 and pitched well, going 6-8 with a 4.14 ERA.

Cubs: Kyle Tucker had a HR among his three hits and knocked in the tiebreaking run with a single and fielding error by the host Marlins in the eighth as the Cubs won 2-1. The NL Central-leading Cubs took two games of the three-game set against the Marlins after a walk-off loss on Monday and have won seven of their last nine games.

Mariners: RHP George Kirby is expected to start and make his season debut when the Mariners open a four-game series against the Astros in Houston. Kirby has been on the IL since March 24 with inflammation in his throwing shoulder. The 27-year-old’s return Thursday night should help bolster the Mariners’ rotation that remains without opening day starter Logan Gilbert, who’s working back from a flexor strain in his right forearm. Kirby started 33 games last season to tie for the MLB lead. He went 14-11 with a 3.53 ERA with 179 strikeouts and 23 walks in 191 innings.
