Colorado State’s sensational late-season run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament ended there with a last-second, 72-71 loss to Maryland on Sunday in Seattle.

Despite trailing the No. 12 Rams for much of the game, the No. 4 Terps caught CSU in the closing minutes of the game and then got a running jumper from Derik Queen at the buzzer for the win. It came after Jalen Lake gave the Rams a 71-70 lead with a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining.

The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for CSU that included the Mountain West tournament championship, and the Rams ended the season at 26-10.

The Rams led 37-30 at halftime and were able to maintain their lead for much of the second half. With 8:23 remaining, the Terps pulled within 60-58.

CSU went on a 4-1 run to go ahead 64-59 with 5 minutes remaining, but Maryland answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 64-64 with 3:47 to go. The Terps scored four straight points to take their largest lead of the game at 68-64 with 2:30 left.

A pair of free throws by Nique Clifford and a jumper by Lake tied the game at 68-68 with 54 seconds on the clock. The Terps then retook the lead on a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left.

The Rams took a timeout with 11 seconds remaining, and on the ensuing play, Lake drained a 3-pointer to give CSU a 71-70 lead. Maryland got the ball across midcourt and called timeout with 3.6 seconds remaining.

That set up one final play for the Terps and they got the ball to Queen, who was able to make a contested shot off the glass at the buzzer.

In his final game as a Ram, Clifford led the team with 21 points. Lake had 13, while Kyan Evans and Bowen Born each had 10.

After the teams traded the lead for the first three minutes of the game, a 3-pointer by Lake gave the Rams a 9-8 lead with 16:57 left in the first half.

That shot started an 8-0 run for the Rams that ended with a 14-8 lead with 13:34 left before halftime. After Maryland cut the CSU advantage to 14-10, the Rams went on an 8-0 run to take a 12-point lead after a pair of free throws by Clifford, their largest of the first half, with 10:29 remaining before halftime.

Maryland made a run of its own, cutting the CSU lead to 24-22 with 6:52 left in the first half. The Rams went up 35-26 on a jumper by Clifford with 1:29 remaining, but the Terps trimmed their deficit to 35-30 in the closing seconds.

Clifford made a layup with one second remaining to give the Rams a 37-30 lead at halftime.

Then the second half came down to the wire with the Terps getting the final shot to win the game.

It was an historic season for the Rams in several ways. Their 16 Mountain West wins were the most in conference play in program history. They took the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament and won it. Sunday’s game was also CSU’s first second-round appearance since 2013.

In the loss to Maryland, Clifford became CSU’s all-time single-season scoring leader.
