Work set Friday on Ocean Street Extension

The County of Santa Cruz Department of Community Development and Infrastructure has announced a road closure from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday on Ocean Street Extension.

The extension will be closed at Quail Crossing for an asphalt overlay treatment. The schedule is subject to change due to weather or other conditions, according to the release from the county.

Peter Hernandez to address GOP luncheon

San Benito County Supervisor Peter Hernandez will address the Santa Cruz Republican Federation luncheon from noon to 1:30 p.m. July 25 at Seascape Golf Course, 610 Clubhouse Drive, Aptos.

Hernandez, who was born and raised in Hollister by immigrant parents, is running again for Congress District 18 against Democrat Zoe Lofgren in the 2024 elections.

Work to close northbound Bay/Porter on-ramp

A preventative bridge maintenance project on Highway 1 in Capitola project will require intermittent closure of the Bay/Porter on-ramp to northbound Highway 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday July 27, according to a release from Caltrans.

This project will place scour protection along bridge supports situated in Soquel Creek. Message and directional signs will be in place to assist travelers. This Soquel Creek Bridge project is expected to be completed by the end of September 2023.

City has openings on advisory bodies

The City of Santa Cruz has openings in local government through its advisory bodies. These are boards, commissions, committees, and task forces that deal with a variety of issues and make recommendations to the City Council. Unless otherwise noted, applicants must be city residents and/or city voters. The positions are unpaid.

The council is advertising the following openings, and the appointments will be scheduled when a sufficient number of applications are received.

• Sister Cities Committee (three at-large openings): This 11-member committee coordinates activities for Santa Cruz’s five sister cities. The duties include promoting international friendship through arranging for cultural exchanges, participating in fund-raising activities, and planning receptions, festivals and educational programs.

• Water Commission (two openings; one at-large opening and one to be appointed by Councilmember Newsome) This eight-member commission advises the City Council in all matters pertaining to the Santa Cruz Water System and its maintenance and management. The commission also makes studies of long-range plans for securing sources of domestic water supply for the city and reports its conclusions and recommendations to council.

• County Latino Affairs Commission (one opening) This nine-member county commission is involved in Latino community affairs. The City Council makes two nominations. Applicants must be residents of Santa Cruz County.

Housing Matters awarded grant for artist

Housing Matters on Monday announced it has been awarded a $140,000 grant through the Central Coast Creative Corps to hire an artist for one year through a pilot program focused on community engagement.

Housing Matters was one of 23 community partners from six Central Coast counties to receive the grant award, according to a release from the organization. Three other Santa Cruz County organizations are also among the funding recipients.

The artist will collaborate with Housing Matters to design, produce and facilitate community-centered projects, activities, and events meant to bring awareness to the issue of homelessness and humanize the people experiencing it. The position will start in September and run through mid-August 2024. The salary for this position will be $100,000, plus $20,000 for expenses.

Groundwater agency seeks board members

The Santa Cruz Mid-County Groundwater Agency is accepting applications to fill two vacancies for well owner representatives on the board of directors, one vacancy for a director and one vacancy for an alternate director.

The agency is a public agency formed in 2016 to comply with California’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. It is responsible for groundwater management in the Mid-County Groundwater Basin in the communities of Soquel, Aptos, Capitola, Live Oak and La Selva Beach.

To be eligible, an applicant must own, operate, or be served by an individual well, small water system, mutual, or other non-municipal water system within the Santa Cruz Mid-County Groundwater Basin. The time commitment is approximately four hours per month, including evenings. The position is unpaid.

Beach festival seeks parade float builders

Capitola Beach Festival celebrates Capitola Village on Sept. 23 and Sept. 25 with family friendly outdoor activities. Float builders are needed for the Saturday Lighted Nautical Parade on Soquel Creek.

The festival provides the barge and building site. Participants provide the lights and the fun. The top three finishers receive cash awards for their favorite nonprofit.
