SANTA CRUZ >> Jurors found 23-year-old Javier Campos Jr. guilty of a handful of weapons-related charges within a couple of hours of launching their deliberations.

Campos faces a potential maximum prison term of more than five years. His felony charges are related to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as having a loaded handgun in his vehicle when he led police on a June 14 high-speed pursuit from Watsonville streets north to near the Morrissey Boulevard exit of Highway 1. The early evening pursuit caused a traffic disturbance in both directions, as highway commuters headed south were unsure from which direction police sirens were approaching, according to numerous local traffic social media post discussions from that day.

Campos is a person of interest in separate multi-victim shootings in Oakland, with one man killed, and in San Francisco. Those agencies had yet to file criminal charges Friday. Meanwhile, in Santa Cruz, Campos did not waive his right to a speedy trial, resulting in its unusually rapid trip through court proceedings.

Assistant District Attorney Yukiko Orii and public defense attorney Joe Ziebron wrapped up closing arguments Thursday at the end of the three-day trial. Jurors signaled to Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge Denine Guy their readiness to return later that afternoon.

Asked how Campos’ potentially pending cases affected the local case, Orii said her office was not concentrating on offenses he may have committed outside of Santa Cruz County. Orii added that when it came time to decide between a jury trial and a dismissal, “we were always going to pursue a trial” related to Campos’ dangerous conduct.

“Our focus was always about the safety of our community, here,” Orii said. “I don’t think we would have done anything differently if it was all of the same conduct without his other pending charges elsewhere.”
