Homebuyers looked for the usual and the out-there — from homes with garages to ones with spooky vibes — as they searched for properties on Zillow in 2024.

The company analyzed what people across the country looked for on its platforms last year when they used Zillow’s AI-powered “natural language” search feature. The feature allows homebuyers to use everyday language instead of preset filters to search for properties.

Folks looking on Zillow searched most often for ranch-style homes, seeking their single-story convenience. Searches for lakes, duplexes, cabins and farms rounded out the top five searches nationally last year.

Searches for acreage and garages also were popular. Garages were one of the most-sought property features in 46 states.

Pool was among the top three search terms in 38 states. Unsurprisingly, searches for pools topped lists in places such as Florida, California and Texas.

Unique searches

A few folks were on the hunt for unusual home features in 2024, Zillow found.

At least one person in 22 states looked for a “haunted” property.

One Pennsylvania shopper searched for a home with a “pony farm.”

A homebuyer in Colorado searched for a “roller coaster.”

One in Michigan wanted a home with “laser tag.”

And someone in Texas wanted a “bowling alley.”

One Zillow user searched across the country for a “party barn.”

Lifestyle-specific searches

Varying searches based on location showed that home shoppers in certain parts of the country were looking for specific lifestyles.

Shoppers in Pennsylvania, New York and Georgia were looking to live in urban areas. Popular search terms in these places included downtown, loft and high-rise.

Homebuyers in New Jersey, California, Texas and Nevada searched for “mansions,” properties described as “luxury” or ones that touted “views.”

Popular search terms in Michigan, Hawaii, Idaho, North Carolina and Alaska included lake, cabin and beachfront.

Searches for homes characterized as “pet-friendly” were popular in Florida, Arizona, Tennessee and Colorado.
