BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff is transferring after a tumultuous few months that included being named in a civil sexual assault suit that was later dismissed.

“After a lot of prayers, reflection and conversations with those I trust, I’ve made the difficult decision to officially withdraw from BYU and the BYU football program,” Retzlaff posted Friday on Instagram. “BYU has meant more to me than just football. It’s been a place of growth — spiritually, mentally and physically. I’m grateful for every teammate, coach, staff member and fan who’s supported me along the way.”

Retzlaff reportedly faced a suspension for violating the honor code at the university, which is run by the Mormon church, after acknowledging a consensual sexual relationship in his defense against the lawsuit.

Retzlaff threw for 2,947 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions last season as the Cougars contended for a spot in the Big 12 championship game.

The quarterback is a Centennial High (Corona) alum who also played at Golden West College and Riverside City College.

BYU coach Kalani Sitake avoided commenting on Retzlaff’s situation at Big 12 media days earlier this week, saying it was a private matter and he shouldn’t comment before Retzlaff.

JURISPRUDENCE

Former Alabama basketball player Darius Miles will stand trial on capital murder charges with proceedings to begin the week of Dec. 1. The date was set by Tuscaloosa judge Daniel F. Pruet and takes place two years after Miles was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Jamea Harris.

Miles has been held without bail in Tuscaloosa County Jail since he was arrested on Jan. 15, 2023. He was removed from the Alabama basketball team that same date.

Then 21 years old, Miles was one of two suspects charged in Harris’ death. He was arrested along with childhood friend Michael Lynn Davis. Davis pulled the trigger of a handgun Miles gave to him, according to police investigators. The gun was allegedly fired into a Jeep owned by Harris, who was sitting in the passenger seat and killed.

Davis was convicted of capital murder in May 2025 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. If Miles is convicted, he faces the same sentence. Miles was accused of “aiding and abetting” Davis. In Alabama, being in a vehicle when someone is shot and killed results in a capital murder charge.

Current Charlotte Hornets player Brandon Miller, a teammate of Miles, testified in Davis’ trial. He and Miles exchanged text messages in the half-hour leading up to the shooting. Miller drove to a Tuscaloosa bar to pick up Miles, but said in testimony that he did not know Miles had put the gun in Miller’s car. Miller was not charged with any crime nor accused of any wrongdoing in the shooting investigation.

Pro boxer Gervonta “Tank” Davis was arrested early Friday morning in South Florida on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

Davis, 30, was picked up shortly after midnight near the popular Lincoln Road area of Miami Beach, officials said.

The charge was connected to an incident that occurred last month in Doral, a residential city in western Miami-Dade, Miami Beach police spokesperson Christopher Bess said. Davis and his vehicle information had been added to a law enforcement database, and a license plate reader set up in Miami Beach flagged his car.

Miami Beach police made the initial stop and then turned Davis over to Doral police, Bess said. Davis was being held on $10,000 bail.

Davis, who is from Baltimore, is in the regular conversation for best pound-for-pound boxer. The WBA lightweight champion won his first 30 bouts, 28 by knockout, with his devastating punching power drawing sellouts crowds from New York to Washington to Las Vegas.

Davis also was charged in two other domestic violence cases, both in South Florida. The first case was discharged, according to ESPN. The second was dismissed after the woman refused to press charges.

The Chicago Bears and general manager Ryan Poles agreed to a contract extension through the 2029 season, multiple media outlets reported. The Bears are coming off a last-place finish in the NFC North. They are 15-36 in three years under Poles and have two double-digit losing streaks during his tenure.

TENNIS

Venus Williams accepted a wild-card invitation to play singles at this month’s DC Open, which would be the seven-time Grand Slam champion’s first tournament in more than a year. Williams, who turned 45 in June, is listed as “inactive” on the WTA Tour’s website. She hasn’t competed in an official match since the Miami Open in 2024.

“There’s something truly special about D.C.: the energy, the fans, the history,” Williams said in a statement released by organizers of the hard-court tournament, which begins with qualifying next weekend. “This city has always shown me so much love, and I can’t wait to compete there again.”

Williams also played in the nation’s capital in 2022.

In February, the event in Indian Wells announced that Williams would be making her return to the tour by playing there, then later backtracked and said she wouldn’t.
