He was 98 years old. John was born on March 7, 1925, in Canon City, Colorado, to Everett Davis and Martha Canterbury Davis. He had a brother, James Davis (deceased), and a sister, Jewel Parker. John served in the US Naval Air Corps in World War II before receiving his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1948.
That same year he married Ardelle Hooning, and they had three children, Mark, Andrea, and Melinda. Ardelle died in 1959. In 1960 John married Carol Hall, and they had two children, Kevin and Rochelle; they divorced in 1981. In 1987 he married Fifi Zeff, to whom he was married at the time of his death. John received his M.A. from Sacramento State College in 1964 and became an educator, serving as the principal of several elementary schools in Woodland, California, and as the director of special education for the Woodland Joint Unified School District. In retirement, he continued to work as a substitute teacher in Sacramento in addition to traveling the world with Fifi. He was a serious amateur photographer who specialized in beautiful photos of flowers, and he taught photography in a senior citizens program in the Sacramento school district. Most important to him was his family, and he is survived by his sister, his wife, his 5 children, and his 4 step-children, 14 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. One grandchild, Evan, predeceased him. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 18, at 4:00 PM in the fireplace room at Sierra 2 Center for the Arts and Community, 2791 24th Street, Sacramento, CA 95818.
