FORT WORTH, Tex. >> Collecting large hauls of turnovers is nothing new for the Colorado men’s basketball team.
And on Sunday, the Buffaloes showed they can be versatile in how they record them.
CU finished with 19 turnovers in a 68-57 loss at TCU, giving the Horned Frogs a 28-8 edge in points off turnovers that essentially determined the outcome. The 19 turnovers tied for the third-most in a game this season for CU.
This time, the giveaways came from all angles. Among the Buffs’ 10 first half turnovers were four compiled with shot clock violations and another on an offensive foul.
CU committed nine more after halftime, but most of those after the break were the result of ill-advised passes.
CU recorded just 12 turnovers during Tuesday’s loss against Arizona State, but the Buffs have recorded at least 14 in their nine other Big 12 defeats.
“We’ve got guys that are just unaware of the shot clock,” CU head coach Tad Boyle said. “That’s concentration. That’s just Basketball 101 as a college player. And it wasn’t our freshmen. It was our veterans. And there’s no communication. There’s no talk. That is an indication of lack of concentration when you don’t know how much time is on the shot clock.
“We’re going to play in a lot louder places than this.”
Starting five
Boyle continued his search for a spark for his club, utilizing his ninth different starting lineup in 21 games. This time, though, the starting five — Julian Hammond III, Andrej Jakimovski, Trevor Baskin, Sebastian Rancik and Bangot Dak — did provide a spark, making five of their first six shots while the Buffs jumped to an 11-2 lead.
Boyle typically inserts his first substitutions at the first media timeout, and he did so again on Sunday despite the hot start from a club desperately in need of production.
“Staying fresh, to me, should be an advantage for us,” Boyle said. “It’s hard to play 11 guys and have continuity. I thought after that first four or five minutes, our offense stagnated the rest of the half, basically. You can second-guess yourself all you want when you’re losing.”
Baskin started for the seventh time this year and the first time since Jan. 15 against Cincinnati.
