A Glendale Heights police sergeant and Homer Glen’s director of community events are dead in what officials are calling a murder-suicide in the 13600 block of Shannon Drive in Homer Glen, officials said Monday.

The village of Glendale Heights posted a statement saying police Sgt. Michael Huff took his own life and the life of his wife, Jacquelyn Huff, in their Homer Glen home.

Homer Glen Mayor Christina Neitzke-Troike said the flag outside Village Hall was lowered Monday in Jacquelyn Huff’s honor and the village plans to dedicate its new Christmas tree for her at the Homer for the Holidays event next month.

“She wasn’t just an employee,” Neitzke-Troike said. “She was a friend to everyone at Village Hall.”

Huff, the community events coordinator for Homer Glen, marked her one year anniversary in the job this month.

Neitzke-Troike said Huff was an energetic and loving woman who was responsible for all the events that Homer Glen residents enjoy, including HomerFest, Homer for the Holidays, Chalk it Up and the Kite Festival.

“Every event in the last year she has been at and has been a part of,” Neitzke-Troike said. “She loved being with people.”

Recently, Huff was involved in creating Veterans Day care packages for the village’s veterans, and she worked on the new veterans’ banner program, she said.

Huff leaves behind a 6-year-old son and two stepchildren.

According to the Glendale Heights statement, Sgt. Huff was an employee for more than 20 years, and Jacquelyn Huff was a former Glendale Heights employee. The village of Glendale Heights and the Glendale Heights Police Department are working with the Will County sheriff’s office, the statement said.

Will County sheriff’s deputies responded at 5:46 p.m. Sunday after a woman called 911 stating she heard homeowners arguing, followed by the sound of gunshots, according to a sheriff’s office statement.

When police arrived, they found the Huffs on the kitchen floor, and a small-caliber handgun was found near the bodies, police said.

Members from the Northwest Homer Fire Department also responded and confirmed they were dead, police said.
