The Redlands Footlighters are staging “Tuesdays With Morrie,” adapted from the bestselling book by sports journalist Mitch Albom, running weekends through April 27.

The play recounts a series of encounters between Albom and Morrie Schwartz, his former professor and mentor, in the final months of Schwartz’s life.

After he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, Schwartz, a professor of sociology at Brandeis University, became famous through a set of televised interviews with Ted Koppel on “Nightline.”

Albom’s book, published after Schwartz’s death, was a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into a film starring Jack Lemmon.

James Griffin directed the Redlands Footighters’ production, with Nathan Cabrera playing Albom and Jeff Richards as Schwartz.

“In today’s fast-paced world, Morrie’s wisdom reminds us to slow down, to cherish the people around us and to prioritize what really matters — human connection,” Griffin said in a news release from the Footlighters.

The production opened Friday and continues 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. There is also a 2 p.m. performance April 26 that will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the actors and director, according to the news release.
